This Sunday, 5th June, was a great showing for the Wolves overall. Our club ended the day with a record of 19 wins and 14 losses.

The Under 12 boys ended the day with a 3-1 record. The Champs team won by a huge margin, and now sit on top the ladder due to the win percentage increase they got from Sunday’s big win. They handled full court pressure with ease and converted to layups the other way. Team 2 also won by a big margin down at Willetton. And team 3, after having 2 tough games in a row where they lost leads in the 4th quarter to lose – now are back on track with a 2 game winning streak. They were our WABL Team of the Week last week, and this week they won again in a tough game – moving to 3rd on the ladder.

The Under 12 Girls went 3-1. The Champs team remains short handed with players out, but players stepped up in the absence of injured teammates and got a big win. The game was fairly close going into the 4th quarter – but a 20-2 run to finish the game led to a blowout margin in the end. Team 2 continues to play great team basketball with well-rounded scoring efforts from the whole team. They won against East Perth 48-25. The last win of the age group was Team 3 who had a nail bitter finish and ended up on top 36-35. A tightly contested game of big runs.

The Under 14 Boys went 2-2. Teams 3 and 4 had wins while Teams 1 and 2 fell short. The Champs team went on to fall just short of qualifying for Nationals the following day, but fought extremely hard and should be very proud. Team 4 improved to 5th place by notching a 9-point win over the Hills Raiders. Team 3 got another big win and improve to 7-0 on the season. But there are 2 other unbeaten teams in the age group still – rounds 9 and 11 coming up will be really exciting games where our Wolves boys get to play the other 2 unbeaten teams. These 2 games will separate the top of the ladder and be a fun challenge for a team that is playing really good basketball right now.

The Under 14 Girls went 2-2. The Champs girls fell just short (71-64) versus the Rockingham team. The girls had a tie game with 3 minutes left, but offensively shots just didn’t fall and the game slipped away. However, they obviously figured out something, as they followed up their Sunday game with a 3-0 showing at National Qualifiers and solidified a spot. Team 2 had an 18 point win again Rockingham. Izzy O’Donnell and Emily Epple both had 14 points to lead all scorers.

The Under 16 Boys went 2-2 with the Champs team and Team 3 winning, and Teams 2 and 4 falling short. Team 3 had a 70-62 win over Rockingham with a big offensive output from Makai Clarkson and Rhys Weir, who combined for 42 of the 70 points. The team improves to 4th place on the ladder.  The Champs boys also got a 28 point win. Wieu Atuer had his best game of the year with 20 points. But he also got it done with some steals and deflections that led to him leading the break and scoring the other way.

The Under 16 Girls went 2-2. Teams 2 and 3 won, and Teams 1 and 4 lost. Team 2 had a dominant performance right from the jump. They were up early, and did not look back. Team 3 also had a fast start against Cockburn. They were up 20-7 at quarter time. Five players ended up in double figures, and they held Cockburn to 46 points. They remain undefeated on the season. Only one other team is still unbeaten on the season, and they will play each other in a fun contest in 2 weeks.

The Under 18 Boys had a 1-3 day. Team 4, coached by Malcom Clark, had a great defensive performance to get the win – holding Perry Lakes to just 53 points. This is a huge improvement following the 98 points they allowed last week. Luke Owens had a big 19 point game and Matt Gibbs added 17 points as well.

The Under 18 Girls group went 2-1 on the day. After their first loss of the year last week, the 18 Champs girls get back to their winning ways with ah 26 point win over Rockingham. Jasmine Kirby had 10 points, but had a handful of fantastic assists. Kyah Nichols was leading scorer with 24 in a combination of ways. She got some easy scores with rim runs and seals in transition, and as a cutter and found her rhythm that way through great activity levels. Team 2 won 71-34 at Wally Hagan against Cockburn with a very balanced scoring attack. Team 4 had a tough 5-point loss – Jade Howsam and Lily Sudano both had 16 points, but they came up just short after leading at 3rd quarter time.

The Under 20 Men went 2-0 with a 95-93 win by the Champs team. Jack Kingswood had a huge 34 point day that included 5 threes made, and Logan Harris and Joseph Plummer chipped in big scoring totals as well. Team 2 is now on a 2 game winning streak after their 81-55 win over Mandurah.

It was a great Sunday of basketball. Lots of excitement, lots of passion. Go Wolves!
