AFL Victoria has announced the 20-round fixture for the 2009 TAC Cup season that sees the introduction of the Gold Coast and more VFL curtain-raisers.
The 2009 TAC Cup season kicks off on Saturday, April 4 and the first round features the new Gold Coast Football Club against Eastern Ranges at Carrara. Other first round match-ups include Geelong at Bendigo, Gippsland home to Dandenong, Western at home versus NSW/ACT, last season’s premier Murray against North Ballarat and in a double header at Visy Park, Northern versus local rival Calder and Sandringham against Oakleigh.
The new Gold Coast side plays 11 home matches at Carrara including three AFL curtain-raisers plus national carnival games against NSW/ACT and Tasmania.
Aside from games against the Gold Coast, Victorian TAC Cup clubs will again play interstate challenge matches against state representative sides from NSW/ACT, Tasmania and Northern Territory.
AFL Victoria CEO Peter Schwab said the inclusion of the Gold Coast would be of benefit to the TAC Cup.
“It gives these talented young Victorian players a taste of interstate travel like they would experience in the AFL,” Schwab said.
Schwab added the TAC Cup fixture featured three development weekends as part of Victoria’s talented player pathway and more TAC Cup matches would be played as curtain-raisers to VFL games, further linking the two state competitions.
