Weekly wrap - the Fotu brothers shine
We begin our weekly roundup highlighting the Harbour representative players that were invited to attended the Basketball New Zealand National Teams Selection Camps at St Kentigern College over the weekend.
The players in attendance were:
U16 Girls – Bailey Flavell, Zenthia Stowers, Kodee Williams-Sefo
U16 Boys – Gus Dallow, Jameer Reed
U15 Girls – Draun Forbes, Rebecca Moors, Amy Pateman
U15 Boys – Chris and Josh Wylie, Hadi Alashami, Bartosz Jackowski, Julius Halaifonua
Meanwhile in the Sal’s NBL Dan Fotu scored a career high 24 points as Franklin Bulls opened Round 2 of the competition with a come from behind 92-86 win at Wellington Saints.
Rob Loe put up a monster performance of 17 points, 12 rebounds and 7 blocks as Auckland Tuatara dominated Taranaki Airs winning 80-55 at Eventfinda Stadium on Friday night. There was also a nice cameo of 9 points from Tom Beattie in the win and 7 rebounds plus 3 rebounds from U19’s teammate Charlie Dalton.
The Airs produced a miraculous turn around in form the next day defeating Hawkes Bay Hawks 95-93 less than 24 hours after their mauling by the Tuatara. Scott Telfer had 9 points in a game they won with a made 3-pointer on the buzzer.
Manawatu Jets recorded an impressive 90-86 road win in Christchurch. Liam Judd played big minutes as a starter contributing 7 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals.
Overseas and Penina Davidson posted a third consecutive double-double as the Cairns Dolphins fell 94-73 to Brisbane Capitals. Penina posted 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Further afield in Japan Isaac Fotu was also in good form as Tochigi Brex registered a comfortable 82-57 win against Gunma CT. Isaac scored 20 points on 9 from 13 shooting while also securing 7 rebounds.
Sam Waardenburg enjoyed his best outing in the German Bundesliga to date despite his club Ludwigsburg losing 87-80 to Goettingen. Sam finished with 19 points, on 6 from 9 shooting, and also claimed 5 rebounds.
Also in Germany Yanni Wetzell scored 8 points in ALBA Berlin’s latest EuroLeague outing - an 88-71 win against ASVEL.
Still in Germany and Matt Freeman had 9 rebounds and 6 points as Bremerhaven were pipped 89-88 by Giessen in the German Second Division.
