Weekly wrap - Kiani Saxon and Sam Waardenburg excel

The Australian NBL play-offs are at the semi-final stage with a number of former Harbour representative players still involved.

The Breakers are one up in their best of three series against the Tasmanian Jack Jumpers after a resounding 88-68 win at Spark Arena on Sunday meaning Rob Loe, Tom Abercrombie and Dan Fotu are one win away from a Grand Final appearance.

Sam Waardenburg received the Australian NBL Next Generation Award recently and celebrated with a fine display as the Cairns Taipans ousted the Webster brothers (Corey and Tai) and the Perth Wildcats in a sudden death play-off game on Sunday.

Sam added a team high 10 rebounds to 15 points (6/10FG) as Cairns ran out 91-78 winners.

Corey scored 14 points for the Wildcats but unfortunately Tai missed the game due to illness.

In NCAA Division I action Kruz Perrott-Hunt scored 15 points (3/6 3PG) but couldn’t prevent South Dakota (6-8) losing 72-67 to South Dakota State.

Sam Mennenga scored 9 points for Davidson in a narrow 73-71 loss to Fordham – Zach Riley with an assist for the victors.

There were 7 points and 7 rebounds for James Moors as Colorado State soared past Air Force 69-53.

Tayla Dalton scored 9 points as St Mary’s overcame Santa Clara for an 89-79 win. Hats off to the St Mary’s administration in recognizing the game as a Waitangi Day celebration.

Next up for St Mary’s is a clash with Emme Shearer and high flying Portland.

In NAIA Division I play Reihana Maxwell-Topia was a perfect 3 from 3 for 8 points as St Francis, Illinois beat East-West University 85-73. 

In NCAA Division II play Hannah Wentworth was again in good form for Eckerd College. She dropped 17 points in a narrow 79-75 win against Barry University. Eckerd sit top of the Sunshine State Conference ladder with animpressive 15-1 record.

Jordyn Maddix made 3 from 5 three-pointers for 9 points as Auburn at Montgomery were defeated 78-58 by Christian Brothers University.

Tessa Talo-Tomokino also scored 9 points as Northeastern State went down 68-58 to Missouri Western.

In Junior College Kiani Saxon threatened a monster triple-double as Louisiana State University Eunice accounted for Southern Shreveport 96-76. Kiani pulled down a career high 18 rebounds – 9 at the offensive end –  scored 12 points (6/10FG) and dished a team high 8 assists, which was also a career best.

Boston Caldwell scored 13 points as Central Maine suffered a rare loss going down 80-66 to NHTI.

Waiaaria Rogers scored 15 points although Marshalltown were heavily beaten by North Iowa going down 105-45.

Rashaan Smith had 8 points, 4 blocks and 5 rebounds as Western Nebraska breezed past Otero 95-54. Rashaan followed that with 9 points and 8 rebounds in a 73-53 defeat of Trinidad State as Western Nebraska made it seven wins from the last eight games.
