News from 3x3, Secondary Schools Nationals &our professional players
In our latest roundup we take a look at the upcoming Schick 3x3 Cup, the Secondary Schools Nationals Tournament underway in Palmerston North and Harbour athletes in the pros both at the Breakers and overseas.
Almost three years, or more precisely 1,094 days, have elapsed between the end of the last Secondary Schools National Championships and the 2022 edition that gets underway today.
It was October 5, 2019 that Saint Kentigern College defeated Rosmini College 77-51 in the Boys ‘AA’ Grand Final and St Peter’s School Cambridge saw off the challenge of Hamilton Girls High School (78-66) to claim the Girls ‘AA’ championship.
Rosmini will be one of three North Shore representatives looking for success in this year’s Boys tournament.
Westlake Boys are drawn alongside Rosmini in Pool B while Rangitoto College are in Pool D.
The three schools have an impressive ten titles between them – all 10 coming in the last 15 championships to illustrate the dominance of the North Shore schools since Westlake’s first win in 2005.
No North Shore school has won the Girls championship since Northcote College were victorious in 2006.
Our two representatives this year are Zone I Qualifying champs Westlake Girls and Takapuna Grammar. Unfortunately both teams find themselves in the same pool – Pool C.
We will have four teams (at least) to follow at the Schick 3x3 Cup in Invercargill later this month (October 12-15).
The four Auckland based teams have no fewer than 13 current or former Harbour players amongst the 16 selected individuals.
Harbour Breeze – Izzy Pugh, Mackenzie Chatfield, Rebecca Moors, Zoe Richardson
Northern Kāhu - Azure Anderson, Yume Negishi, Casyn Buchman, Chev Paalvast
Auckland Tuatara – Chris McIntosh, Tom Beattie, Liam Judd, Reuben Fitzgerald
Franklin Bulls - Jett Thompson, Denhym Brooke, Christian Martin, Jayden Bezzant
In addition Mitch Dance (Whai), Scott Telfer (Taranaki Airs) and Ella Fotu (Mainland Pouākai) are three other former Harbour players that will be appearing at the Schick Cup.
Mody Maor began his tenure as the 8th Breakers Head Coach with a 101-97 overtime loss at Melbourne United.
The former Harbour big man continued the good form he displayed with the Auckland Tuatara in the NZNBL recording a dozen points and 4 rebounds before retiring to the bench with an ankle injury.
Rob’s 12 points took him to 800 points for the Breakers. With 108 appearances he sits 14th on the Breakers all-time appearance list.
The Breakers will have to manage without the services of Tom Abercrombie in the immediate future as he recovers from eye surgery.
There next assignment is a home game against the Tasmanian Jack Jumpers at Vector Arena on Friday night – October 7th, tip-off 7.30pm. It’s the first home game for the Breakers since June 2021.
In other NBL news Corey Webster scored 11 points on debut for the Perth Wildcats.
Meanwhile brother Tai Webster scored 14 points (3/4 3PG) in his first appearance for Petkim as they won their Turkish League opener 79-70 at Merkezefendi.
Also debuting, but further afield, was Tera Reed. She posted a team high 11 rebounds to accompany 8 points as Pyrinto were defeated 75-71 by Kouvot in the opening round of the Finnish National League.
