Victoria has once again confirmed itself as Australian football’s premier state with 52 per cent of new players drafted to the AFL.
Victoria lead the way with 39 of the 75 players drafted on to AFL club lists for the first time.
In the first round, 10 AFL draftees were Victorian born.
The Sandringham Dragons led the way with six selections, the Oakleigh Chargers had five players taken while TAC Cup premiers Murray Bushrangers had four of its number selected.
AFL Victoria Operations Manager John Hook said the draft was again a tremendous result for Victorian football.
“It was very pleasing to have 39 Victorians of the 75 new players drafted onto AFL club lists in addition to the seven Victorians already elevated from rookie to primary lists in 2008,” Hook said.
“It’s also quite possible that more Victorians will be selected at the pre-season and rookie drafts.
“Full credit to the TAC Cup region managers, AFL Victoria High Performance Managers Leon Harris and Anton Grbac and everyone connected with Vic Metro and Vic Country and the TAC Cup that have helped these young players get drafted.”
AFL Victoria also commends Sandringham Dragons player Jack Watts on his number one selection at the AFL National Draft.
