National recognition for Harbour players.

We begin this week’s roundup in Doha, Qatar where Julius Halaifonua put together a mighty impressive double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds as the New Zealand U17 Men’s National Team opened its FIBA Asia Cup campaign with a 92-67 win against Kazakhstan.

The team are in action again on Tuesday when they take on Korea.

Since his transfer from the New Zealand Breakers Yanni Wetzell has been playing for Baskonia Vitoria in the Spanish League. After overcoming Valencia (2-1) in the Quarter-Final series Baskonia went down to the mighty Real Madrid in the semi-final series.

Yanni may have departed the ANBL but Sam Waardenburg has signed with Cairns Taipans to launch his pro career in the 2022-23 season.

Sam had a terrific career at the University of Miami – he played 118 NCAA Division I games for the Hurricanes in the highly regarded Atlantic Coast Conference.

He will make his ANBL debut at the same time as former Harbour and Rangitoto College teammate Dan Fotu (Dan has of course signed with the Breakers).

Congratulations to Tiarna Clarke and Ella Fotu on their selection for the FIBA 3x3 World Cup being held in Antwerp Belgium (June 21-26).

In addition, Tayla Dalton was selected as a reserve and will travel with the team when they depart, on June June 14, for a build-up tournament in France. The remaining members of the team are Jillian Harmon and Kalani Purcell.

At the World Cup New Zealand have been placed in the same Pool as powerhouse United States as well as France, Austria and Brazil. Rangitoto College Girls Prems Coach, Justine Reed is Head Coach of the New Zealand Team.

Rangitoto College, alumni Jaycin Tini will play for Northern Kāhu in the upcoming Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa season. The eldest daughter of head coach Jody Cameron, Jaycin joins other former Harbour reps, Micaela Cocks, Ash Kelman-Poto, JazzKailahi-Fulu and Akiene-Tera Reed as former Harbour players on the Kāhu roster.

The Kāhu play their first home game, against Tokomanawa Queens at Franklin Pool & Leisure Centre on Monday July 4. All other home games will be played at Eventfinda Stadium.
