Penina Davidson is a Championship winner.
Congratulations to Penina Davidson – an Australian WNBL championship winner!
The Tall Ferns and former Harbour Breeze centre tasted success on Saturday as Melbourne Boomers won the 2022 Australian WNBL title with an emphatic 84-66 victory in the third and deciding game against Perth Lynx.
The Boomers faced an uphill battle after being beaten at home 98-72 by an inspired Perth side in the opening game. They secured a narrow 76-75 win in Perth in game two before getting the job done in Melbourne at the weekend.
It’s the first time Penina has got her hands on a winners-medal since her school and age-group days in New Zealand.
She came extremely close in 2019 when she was Named to the WBC All-Star 5 after leading the Breeze to the Grand Final where they were pipped 89-86 by Auckland Dream in overtime.
The former Rangitoto College standout had come even closer to a championship in her freshman year at the University of California Berkeley. Cal were pipped 61-60 by Stanford in the 2015 Pac-12 Tournament Final.
Well done Penina!
