College wrap douples as a tribute to Tony Pompallier
Our college wrap this week is also a tribute to Tony Pompallier who sadly passed away last week.
Tony’s coaching work touched thousands of young players across the years, amongst them virtually every Harbour player currently on a basketball scholarship in the States.
All of these players will speak fondly of Tony’s influence. Here we take a look at how they are faring – Tony will be looking down proudly on their achievements.
In men’s NCAA Division I play South Dakota’s leading scorer Kruz Perrott-Hunt, averaging 15 points per game, scored exactly that number as the Coyotes went down 89-79 to top of the Summit League table South Dakota State. Kruz also dished a team high 5 assists and claimed 6 rebounds.
James Moors was one of three Colorado State players in double figures as the Rams won a thriller against San Diego State 58-57. The sophomore forward added 8 rebounds, a block and a steal to 10 points (3/3FG, 4/5FT).
Sam Mennenga was also highly efficient as Davidson remained top of the Atlantic 10 with a 78-73 win against George Washington. Sam had 10 points (4/5FG, 3/4FT), 3 rebounds and a block.
Sam Waardenburg recently played his 100th game for the University of Miami Hurricanes who made a sensational start in the ACC. However they have lost twice this week including a 71-58 defeat at Virginia where Sam had 6 points, 5 rebounds, a block and a couple of assists.
Taine Murray has had few opportunities of late at Virginia but has played 15 games in his freshman season with the Cavaliers.
Dan Fotu, responded to more playing time (16 minutes), with 9 points (4/7FG) and 4 rebounds in the Saint Mary’s Gaels 75-54 win against Portland.
Zach Riley joined Fordham University at the end of 2021 and recently scored his first collegiate points – he’s made three appearances to date for the Rams.
Reihana Maxwell-Topia is averaging 5 points per game for St Francis, Illinois in NAIA Division I play.
In women’s NCAA Division ITayla Dalton scored in double figures for the third straight game as St Mary’s got back to .500 in West Coast Conference (WCC) play with a commanding 96-80 win at Pacific. Tayla finished with 15 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists.
Emme Shearer is averaging 7.2 points and 2.1 steals per game for Portland that are 4-3 in the WCC while Tera Reed is averaging 7 points and 4 rebounds per game for the University of Southern California in the Pac 12.
In Division II play Chanel Brodeur-Muir came up with 6 points, 3 rebounds and a steal as St Thomas Aquinas defeated Mercy 71-64 in the East Coast Conference.
Shooting 5 from 9 from beyond the arc Hannah Wentworth’s 15 points was the top score as Eckerd College demolished Palm Beach Atlantic 60-39 in Division II play.
Tessa Talo-Tomokino has started 7 of 15 games for Northeastern State University this season recently scoring a season best 9 points at Newman.
Parehuia Delamere scored 17 points as Western Texas beat Odessa 79-77 in overtime – the sophomore guard and Jordyn Maddix both making important free-throws in the final 6 seconds of the game.
In Junior College Waiaaria Rogers scored 5 points as Marshalltown Tigers were clawed by Southeastern 53-46.
Rashaan Smith is averaging 6 points and 3.3 rebounds per game for Western Nebraska – the number 6 ranked Junior College in the country.
Keeley Tini was once again to the fore as Williston State distanced themselves from Miles to win 76-40. Keeley scored 10 points to accompany 6 rebounds and 4 assists.
Kiani Saxon had 4 points and 3 rebounds as Louisiana State Eunice defeated Southern-Shreveport 88-71
Leo Wenham scored 3 points for Southeast College in a recent win against Peru State.
In Men’s Division II fixtures Sean Murphy threatened a triple-double as Nebraska-Kearney defeated Newman 89-75. Sean dragged down 9 boards to go with 11 points, making 3 from 4 three-pointers, and a career best 7 assists.
Marvin Williams-Dunn scored 7 points as Ouachita Baptist defeated Harding 82-75.
Will Heather has missed recent games for Dallas Baptist due to injury after averaging 9.4 points per game in the first half of the season.
