Pictured:
Aseri Raikiwasa, Jack Kenny and Sid Masters award winners at Mortlock Shield, all big chances for the Mail Medal.
Eastern Eyre pauses to celebrate the individual stars this Sunday at Kyancutta with the Mail Medal and League awards. Both Grand Finalists will have been decided, will the coveted double Mail Medal/Premiership Medal be achieved this year?
Another COVID interrupted season with two rounds not played for that reason. Rounds 12 & 13 missed after an extended mid season break due to inter league commitments, the count will be the first ten completed rounds of the year, at which point all clubs had played equal matches.
A good pointer would be the club picked Most Valuable player as 3,2,1 for those selected in the club best each week. Over the season, this would have been won by Central Eyre United’s Corey Waters (21) from 11 games, narrowly ahead of Kimba Districts Ryley Maitland (18) and Ben Clements (15), both also playing 11 games, Congratulations to these players on wonderful seasons.
So using this as a form guide, a quick look at the chances club by club:
Eastern Ranges
Top of the ladder with one loss and a brand of football that is fast and skilful. They have been able to cover injury with relatively few playing the full quota. Narrow loss on the weekend at the smaller Arno Bay oval, a venue possibly not suiting their young runners. Pretty hard to go past Jack and Jess Kenny, true elite mid fielders with big possessions at every outing. Jack has carried injury while Jess continues to dominate. Rhyce Beinke was out of the blocks early, his flair and drive must get noticed, Long striding Dustin Harris has been great, marking and run has been a weekly highlight, Tough Dean Storic is in and under, team oriented and agile for a big fella. New to the club Adam Hurrell is another who turns heads, long left foot precision passing and fit. The enthusiasm of Burger Claxton is on show every week, leading from defence, is he the one to don the Medal?

Kimba Districts
Main challenger to the Ranges and have they now gone past them? The Tigers treasure possession and play their team brand well. Big Joel Fitzgerald another wonderful year as the spearhead, as far as the club is concerned, that is just what he does, for the rest of us he is a marvel! Ryley Maitland has had a huge year at all levels, EPs no 1 at the State Championships, big Mortlock. After returning from inter league duty, he has lifted to another level, but don’t forget that some of these wont be counted. Plenty of mates at Tigerland, Ben Clements surges from half back set the side up time after time, poised and time on his hands, Reece Rayson covers plenty of ground, all class, all day! Jesse Kemp will poll but has missed games, none better when he is in full flight. James Cant is brave and fast, bound attract the umpires eye.

Ports
A year of growth at the Magpie Nest and they are playing their best football just at the right time. They will challenge Ranges seriously this weekend, best players now getting back, look out! Ports have some genuine jets in their camp, Sid Masters regular big bags up forward but sorties back to defence when needed. Aseri Raikiwasa has been enormous all season, Mortlock Shield B and F, then every week leading the way, on the ball so will get attention! Alec Bryce is a hard in and at it player, when Ports are dominating, he is often where it starts. The sheer speed and work rate of Tommy Laas is another reason for the Ports rise, run and carry from the midfield and using the footy with aplomb. Regular vote winner Tom Davey has missed games but has played enough to give himself a chance here.

Central Eyre United
New boys on the block and have had a difficult injury year, key players missing for long periods. They pushed all the way in the 1st Semi, and will look back on what may have been! Corey Waters has enjoyed a steller year, fit, fast and smart with the football. New team mates around him, look out in 2022. Jesse Stringer hard at it week in week out, never one to shirk the by-play, he just finds himself at every contest, winning most of them. Brandon Waters across half back is a high possession defender, reliable every week. Hayden Heath of the same mould, often taking key position roles against taller opponents, but a keen competitor constantly. Clint Winter and Jake Bruce have both missed games but highly effective when there. Have the Storm won enough games to attract the higher votes?

Cowell
Tough year at the cattery, but they have been competitive for many matches for two and three quarters. Plenty of names at the club, only if they can get them together at the same time! Best chances will be Wayne Piggott, just not getting any older, his strength and reading the game is first class. Nick Franklin in and around the middle, a ball magnet and source of many cats forward forays. Zane Wykamp turns heads, great hands and deceptively quick. Klay Smith is a smooth mover with sticky hands in the marking contest, plays his best against better opponents also. Over the year Cowell have had more players in the best and also the lowest average games played on the season.

This will be an entertaining count with many deserved winners to be narrowed to one.
Will be looking out for the Scratch identical twins views on the chances, with one eye on the football, one eye on the crowd/ netball, another eye on Flemington/ Doomben/ Randwick/ Birdsville and another eye on the AFL/SANFL, they don’t miss much! Looking forward to meeting them both at once!
Spreadsheets are below on the club voting for the season:
1. All Rounds MVP - ranked
2. All Rounds MVP - Club by Club
3. The first ten rounds MVP - The Mail Medal period!
