THE UNOFFICIAL MATCH REPORT
What a cracking day for sport!
A number of people were a little perplexed with the amended start times for football. This happens when we get to finals to allow for extra time in the event of a drawn game.
Ports won their way through to the Junior Colt preliminary final with a comfortable win over a wayward Storm 3.2 (20) to 0.7 (7).
Tom Turner had a day out kicking 8 for Ports as they did likewise in the Senior Colts, shaking off a valiant Storm in the second half to win 12.6 (78) to 7.7 (49)
The B Grade was a thrilling appetiser given there was rarely a kick between the two sides all day.
Fresh off an invigorating, Pilates inspired, pre-game warm-up the Candy Man sold a bit, got himself into trouble, then extricated with a double twist and pike (degree of difficulty 2.68)- Colby Stringer should have opened the scoring for the Storm but the finish came up just short.
At the other end of the ground Cowell utilised reliable Smokin Carlos Jaeschke, he lit up a couple cigars early on, then butted out of the game only to bob up late in the last quarter to level the scores with his 4th cigar. Dave Gray (BOG) iced the game just minutes later with a regulation goal-on-the-run from 25.
In between times Boof Marshall did a great job with some smashing spoils that went miles out of bounds. The best of them took 3 bounces before landing in the back of a parked up ute at the entrance to Cassowary-Ville. Final Scores Cowell 6.7 (43) d Storm 6.1 (37).
The A Grade was another enthralling contest that went right down to the wire - but I’m not sure either of the coaches will agree to play with Sherrins’ Apple Series footy’s again - perhaps that was the reason for all the turnovers.
Ports started in ominous fashion with a couple of trademark goals to Sid Masters at what was probably, marginally, the non-favoured end of the ground (it turned out 8 of 21 were kicked that end) and their young guns, Declan Smith, Tommy Laas and Seth Hutchins were playing with a composure beyond their years.
At the 4 minute 28 second mark of the second quarter (right on cue) a melee erupted over a crude head high tackle on a Storm player. Vision of the melee was replayed on the big screen dubbed with sub-titles from an SBS movie - it made for entertaining AO viewing.
The Storm weren’t going away, every time Ports established a small break the deficit would be clawed back, typically with goals to Tyler Chapman, Hamish May, Bobby Bruce and Jared Sampson.
In a thrilling last quarter the lead changed hands 3 or 4 times.
But it was to be clutch possessions to Evan Hunt, Tom Davey (goal) and a bulletproof pass from Tom Masters to Sid Masters (goal) that sealed the deal for Ports. Final Score Ports 11.10 (76) d Storm 10.9 (69).
Aseri Raikiwasa led Ports from the front, Alec Bryce dominated the centre clearances, Evan Hunt was cool under pressure, Ben Lienert was lively with a couple of great goals, and of course Tom Davey and Sid Masters.
For the Storm I thought Jackson Joyce was great, 1st game of A Grade following a serious knee injury and a couple of tune-up appearances in the B’s. Tyler Chapman, Corey Waters, Jake Bruce and Jake Stringer were others amongst their best.
Noticed a few of the Kimba boys celebrating the 10 year anniversary of their 2011 premiership on the sidelines. The Big-W only has 1 more copy of his book “The ABC’s of coaching - 26 steps to glory” to sell and it will be SOLD-OUT. Leigh Fitz, Nulla and Spider Hunt bought the other 3 copies.
