THE UNOFFICIAL MATCH REPORT
At three quarter time Ranges needed to overcome a 3 goal deficit to maintain their unbeaten status. In reality, they needed to keep Ben “Pidsy” Clements in check.
Has anybody ever completely dominated a quarter of football more than what Pidsy did on Saturday?
If you were a Tigers supporter, he was the gift that just kept on giving! He was like a loose sheet of iron in a 48 knot wind - you just couldn’t nail him. He was everywhere, halfback, half forward, middle, left-foot, right-foot, contested ball in traffic, out on his own, pressure marks from impossible positions. You name it, he did it!
Mind you his old man Dicky could play a bit too!
But unlike Dicky, Pidsy doesn’t have a penchant for spraying every fifth kick out of bounds.
Many a wayward ball of Dicky’s landed in the lap of his Great Aunty Phyllis who was usually about to pour a cuppa-tea from a well used thermos; In the end she deliberately parked two rows back to avoid this crap week in week out - didn’t make any difference. Did you ever get a Christmas card from her Dicky?
Pidsy had a few team-mates too, Burger Fitzgerald absorbed plenty of defensive pressure to hit the scoreboard often enough. His 4 goals taking his seasons tally to 62. (21 clear of nearest rival Sid Masters who kicked 9 against the Storm at Arno Bay). Diesel Woolford had a field day picking off Ranges wayward forays into attack, Ryley Maitland, well he just knocks up getting it. Jimmy Cant was hard at it as usual and the old stager Chunky Vandeleur, he must be gunslinger Wyatt Earp from a previous incarnation - he has the quickest hands in the business without doubt.
For Ranges their best were Jack Kenny, he kicked the game’s opening goal with an inside out bender that defied the laws of physics, Lachy Shambrook who was back to his very best with plenty of run and a stack of possessions off his wing, Dusty Harris on the other wing was in good touch too, Jess Kenny, Dean Storic, Sean Seeley and Brent Gray were all solid contributors.
Final Scores Kimba 9.14 (68) d Ranges 3.9 (27)
Foot Note: The game very nearly didn’t happen - none of the umpires (boundary, goal or central) were affluent enough to have a coin on them for the toss. It was only after Jack Kenny played “hide the whistle behind my back and guess which hand it’s in” with Tristan Baldock that the game got underway.
Ranges B Grade and Junior Colts did manage to round out undefeated minor round seasons with clinical wins. 9.18 (72) to 4.3 (27) in the B Grade with Giles “Captain Morgan” Kearsley helping himself to a couple of goals and 4.3 (27) to 1.0 (6) in the Junior Colts.
Ranges Senior Colts were comfortable winners, but the game was a bit more competitive than the scoreboard might suggest. Final Scores - Ranges 17.9 (111) d Kimba 4.3 (27).
Zane Crettenden dominated field play whilst it was Cody Crosby (6 goals) (and plenty more to come) who did the damage in front of goals.
Aaron (AB) Bammann, or is it Anabolic Bammann; he was like a pygmy on steroids kicking 3 goals in a career best effort for him and special mention to Lachlan Smart, it was a breakout game from him as he racked up disposals in the second half of the game, maybe he was on whatever AB was on.
Next week it is all roads to Kimba for the First Semi Final where apart from the Senior Colts (Storm v Cowell) all games will be rematches from Saturday’s games at Arno Bay.
