THE UNOFFICIAL MATCH REPORT
Congratulations to Hayden Heath (Storm) & Kate Cmerlc (Ranges) on winning the Football / Netball Road Safety Awareness medals yesterday at Wudinna and Ryley Maitland and Jordy McCallum (both Kimba) in the corresponding games at Cowell.
Great to wake up this morning (Sunday) and see that so many “stayers” opted to heed the Road Safety message and camp overnight at the Wudinna Showgrounds.
Not sure who the heavy snorer was in the swag further along from me but ironic that he/she chose a spot right next to an old railway signal.
I hear Ranges are applying for 3 of their own Medicare Cards, 1 to be left at the Wudinna Hospital, 1 with the Wudinna Medical Practice, and the other with the RFDS.
I’m calling in on Brumfield Electronics on Tuesday morning to see if they can get me one of those new fangled talking Fridges that the Storm have in their coaches box. Who knew you can toilet train fridges, every now and then theirs can be heard yelling out “Oh for f&#@‘s sake Dunny”.
Ranges Senior Colts lost their second game of the season (again to the Storm), in doing a Bourke and Wills (getting lost) on the wide open spaces of the Wudinna Oval. You need 80/80 vision to see what’s going on at the other end of the ground.
For the Storm It all started in the middle where Duke Syme combined with Jacob Ryan to dominate the centre clearances. Throw Jake Mullan in the mix and this trio combined to kick 5 of the Storms 13 goals - 2 of Jacob Ryan’s came at full tilt from long range, they were explosive goals. And a shout out to Jed Bigg (2 goals) don’t be fooled by his stature, he’s a real goer.
Football lesson 101, play the football until an umpire blows his whistle to signal a dead ball. Don’t assume it is going to go out of bounds. Just ask Thomas Sampson, he was the only one to chase a loose ball in the forward pocket that WAS heading out of bounds; a fickle bounce, it “stayed in”, Thomas swooped and a sausage roll was his for the taking. It was a nice finish too.
When Jared Sampson kicked the second of his 4 goals to give the Storm (who had dominated play) a half time lead of 6.1 to 3.6 you sensed the Ranges unbeaten run was about to come to an end.
Whatever was said in the visitors change rooms at half time - it worked; the Ranges midfield found their mojo and the ensuing 6 goal to 2 third quarter revival was enough to steal a most unlikely win.
Twice in that 3rd quarter Sir Ollie Hannemann breached the Storms defence with long raking drop punts to pin point team mates Jaylynn McCallum (2 goals) and Reagan Taheny (3 goals) who’d slipped their immediate opponents to be all on their lonesome in the goal square. They were lay-down-misere goals.
After the Visitors extended their 11 point three quarter time lead to 29 the Storm rallied late to bridge the margin firstly to 21 points then a great goal to Tasman Fitzgerald from the boundary brought it back to 15 and then a poster on the final siren had Ranges 12.8 (80) defeating the Storm 10.6 (66)
Best for Ranges in an open game of footy were Hank Burton, Jess Kenny, Adam Hurrell, Sir Ollie Hannemann, Riley Evans (3 goals) and Dean Storic who took yet another great mark managing some impressive “hang time” courtesy of a Tyson Jackson shoulder.
Best for the Storm were Jake Bruce, Corey Waters, Hayden Heath, Tasman Fitzgerald, Tyson Jackson and Jared Sampson.
