Round 11: Knights and ANU Leading the Charge

O’Connor Knights kept their title charge on track, but only just, as they survived a late scare to claim a narrow 1-0 win over Brindabella Blues on the synthetic surface at Melrose High School.

The Blues nearly grabbed a point at the death, but striker Zac Lawrence saw his 90th minute penalty saved by Knights’ custodian Jack Miller, which meant that the Knights, perhaps not at their very best, came away with what might turn out to be the three most valuable points they secure in the 2021 campaign.

The vital moment of a tense and tight contest came when Marcin Zygmunt rose highest with ten minutes remaining to meet an inch-perfect in-swinging corner from Josip Jadric send a header into the back of the Blues net for the clincher.

Weston-Molonglo FC moved off the bottom of the NPL2 table when they returned from their visit to Gissing Oval, the home of Wagga City Wanderers, with all three points courtesy of a resounding 5-2 success.

Abderrahim Dellahi bagged a brace for the visitors, moving onto five goals for the season, with Liam Boyle also getting a pair of goals to his name, Sam McLachlan the other Weston-Molonglo FC goalscorer. The Wanderers were well and truly in the match at the break, freakily kept in the contest by two own goals from the same Weston-Molonglo FC player, Geordie Freeman the unlucky man, meaning the teams entered the sheds all-square at 2-2.

The Magpies flew highest in the second half though and took the match by the scuff of the neck to earn the points that took them above their immediate opponents, consigning Wagga to the foot of the league table.

The only match on Sunday saw ANU FC make sure they stayed top of the table on goal difference as they wore down a stubborn Yoogali SC to claim a 2-0 victory on ANU Willows.

The University side had the game in their control by the half-time point as a penalty from Isaac Ellis, his third goal of the NPL2 campaign, and a first of the season for Hugh O’Brien put them 2-0 to the good. Adam Condipodero’s team continue to look the goods and, alongside the Knights are fighting toe-to-toe for promotion. Their clash in Round 14 at O’Connor Enclosed is beginning to take on greater significance.

Meanwhile, the highly anticipated fixture between White Eagles and Queanbeyan City at Woden Park was postponed to a later date.
