Double fugure delight for former Harbour reps.
Micaela Cocks celebrated her Platinum Homes Harbour Breeze signing with 14 points, making 6 from 8 from the field, but Townsville Flames were defeated 71-63 by Southern District Spartans in NBL1 action.
Also in double figures in a losing cause was Brooke Blair. Brooke top scored for Brisbane but the Capitals were defeated 74-64 by USC Rip City Roar – the 2020 Harbour Breeze guard finished with 17 points.
Townsville are third on the NBL 1 ladder with a 5-2 record while Brisbane (3-3) have slipped to 7th.
Further south Yanni Wetzell was in fine form for South East Melbourne Phoenix in their must win Australian NBL semi-final clash with city rivals Melbourne United on Sunday.
One down in the best-of-three series Yanni scored 20 points and snared 8 rebounds in a 90-79 bounce back victory from the Phoenix.
Phoenix coach Simon Mitchell was delighted with Yanni’s performance.
“For a rookie professional to put that sort of performance on a world class player (Jock Landale), it was a pretty special moment for Yanni and he will always look back on it as being pretty pivotal.”
Unfortunately Yanni and the Phoenix couldn’t repeat those heroics on Tuesday going down 84-74 in the deciding game – Yanni produced 6 points, 4 rebounds and a steal.
In the New Zealand NBL there were successful weekend excursions for Denhym Brooke, Jonno Janssen, Alex Talma and Brayden Inger. All four former Harbour reps scored in double figures as their respective teams secured victories:
