THE UNOFFICIAL MATCH REPORT – Mortlock Shield Day One
Fair to say COVID had very little impact on day 1 of the Mortlock Shield - how fortunate are we.
A healthy crowd, aided and abetted by great weather witnessed some close matches.Eastern Eyre faced Lincoln City first up.
We began like a dodgy toaster, burning everything that came our way.
We had a bit of the ball but turned it over time and time again, and the opposition invariably punished us on the scoreboard as they rebounded with great effect. Not only that, we weren’t attacking the ball or the player with the ball, it was a lack lustre effort. At the break we trailed 0.4 (4) to 5.1 (31).
It was a different team that came out after the break, suddenly City’s defence were under siege and the margin was decreasing incrementally. A five goal second half, Sid Master (3), Jack Kenny and Burger Fitzgerald one each, added some respectability to the scoreboard.
Had it been a traditional 4 quarter game I think the result may well have favoured Eastern Eyre. Final scores Eastern Eyre 5.7 (37) lost to Lincoln City 8.2 (50)
With an hour to regroup before facing a new look Western Eyre; Sour Snakes, Killer Pythons and Bananas were in high demand. With a cocktail like that you could end up higher than the local goalposts. I wouldn’t be surprised if Adelaide Airport traffic controllers recognise them as 4 blips on their radar.
In contrast to game 1 you could just sense the playing group were up for the fight; that the dream team of waterboys, Scratch and Shammy (both 1st Nov Scorpios) were gunna be busy and that the Myer Music Bowl (coaches box) would be belting out Razor Ray Chamberlains all time favourite Angels Classic……..No Way, Get F….. F… Off, fairly often.
Captain Jack Kenny backed up his solid game 1 effort to lead from the front with a dashing display garnering possessions all over the ground, Aseri Raikawasa was another standout, and others to have an influence on the game included Ben Clements, Sid Masters, Reece Rayson and Hank Burton.
FINAL scores Eastern Eyre 4.5 (29) d Western Eyre 3.6 (24) with goals to Jack, Aseri, Rhyce Beinke and Alec Bryce.
At the end of the day, our loss was at the hands of the only undefeated side in the competition. Potentially, the shield is still winnable by all but Lincoln Districts.
The Hill was a bit quiet as Shannon Cartier-Watch rightly pointed out earlier. Where’s Fuzzell!
He’s off manning his roadside stall at the Finke Desert Race; I can just picture Toby Price pulling off at the Ewaninga rail siding (in a billowing cloud of dust) to scoff a smoked kingfish sandwich or two. Has the makings of a great TV commercial.
I’m off in search of some New Balance bargains.
Good luck to the lads competing in the Norwood Cup tomorrow.
