GIPPSLAND LEAGUE MEDIA RELEASE
ROUND 9 – June 12th update
Gippsland League consulted all 10 member clubs and gave both football and netball stakeholders a chance to provide feedback around a return to play on June 12th. This included an option of starting junior matches on the 12th June and the senior grades on June 19th.
From the feedback provided the majority of the member clubs were not in favour of resuming the season on June 12th under Greater Melbourne movement restrictions and the other tight regional restrictions including crowds capped at 150. This combined with no confirmation on the ability to use of changerooms and have canteens for this weekend. The majority of the member clubs also specifically stated their preference to resume the senior and junior competitions at the same time effectively ruling out a return to play for junior competitions on June 12th under the current restrictions.
While senior sport is open under the new restrictions as of 11th June, multiple clubs have notified the League that they will not be able to field some teams in Round 9 under the current movement restrictions for Greater Melbourne. Based on this feedback, Gippsland League’s scheduled Round 9 competition matches will not be played on June 12th. Gippsland League will be strongly recommending a return to play on June 19th for all grades and will be working towards this over the next week.
Under the Gippsland League return to play 2021 structure framework the following will apply:
Three rounds interrupted
- No competition football or netball matches will be played on the weekend of 12th June 2021
- Teams will be awarded no points and no percentage for the scheduled matches in R7,8 & 9.
- If 3-5 consecutive rounds interrupted, a minimum 7 day training period will implemented before the next round is played.
- The fixture will be adjusted with the emphasis on clubs receiving equal amounts of home matches in the season. Each club will play each other member club a minimum of once for the season.
- Player finals qualification to be assessed by the League and clubs notified of changes.
- Finals series to remain unchanged.
- As per the recommendations in the COVID framework, the Gippsland League Allowable Player Payments salary cap which currently is at $120,000 will be adjusted on a pro rata of games played. All member clubs will be notified of the adjusted cap.
