After scintilating starts to 2021 both Wonthaggi Power and Moe sit undefeated at the top of the Gippsland League ladder. Both Wonthaggi and Moe are sitting on 6-0 win-loss records and have clearly been the two stand out sides so far in 2021. Two sides starting 6-0 has happened just twice before in the league’s history.
Should Wonthaggi and Moe both win next Saturday they will both be on 7-0 and equal the record of Leongatha and Traralgon from 1998 when they both sat on 7-0 records. Traralgon beat the Parrots then went on to beat them again in the Grand Final. This is the only occurrence of two teams having 7-0 records at the same time.
The last occurrence of two teams sitting at 6-0 was in 2013 when Morwell and Sale had that record, Sale then being beaten by Maffra – Morwell and Sale went on to contest the 2013 Grand Final, won by Morwell. The league has had five other occasions where there has been two teams on 5-0 at the same time : 1962 (Drouin & Sale); 1971 (Moe & Sale); 1997 (Morwell & Traralgon); 2000 (Traralgon & Wonthaggi) and 2012 (Leongatha & Sale). Of the seven seasons where there have been a pair of teams on records of 5-0 or better, the Premier has been involved on five of those seasons, the exceptions being 1962 (won by Trafalgar) and 1997 (won by Leongatha). Morwell, one of the two teams on 5-0 in 1997 lost the Grand Final to Leongatha by just 4 points.
Wonthaggi Power have been the story of the year so far after welcoming back Collingwood premiership star Jarryd Blair to the club. The renewed energy has seen their younger stars come on in their development while bringing in two top 10 Gippsland League players namely Jarryd and Jack Blair has seen the power come back to Wonthaggi. Troy Harley and Jordan Staley are causing havoc in the air while Lachie Jones, Mitch Hayes, Tim Knowles & Fergus O'Connor are having standout years.
The story so far Wonthaggi Power
Moe have arguably the best star power on the competition and their recruits have lived up to all the hype. Declan Keilty is almost a lock for team of the year centre half back after 6 weeks while Kristian Jaksch and Tom Long are proving all sorts of trouble for defenders. Their midfield bats deep with the likes of Manuel, Blaser, Ceppi, Forato and Baldi and with perennial team of the year member Jacob Wood in the second line it shows how many players can run through the engine room. Thier back line has matchups for all shapes and sizes with Keilty leading the line, Rienets back in the side and Stanlake and Biffin in good form they look solid.
