Finally some close games last week and the feedback I have received was that both were well umpired. Both games were low scoring which meant that there were less opportunities for umpires to change positions. With our style of umpiring the central umpire does do the most work and shouldn't spend more than three to four minutes in the middle before rotating. If low scoring is to become the trend then we need to be more creative with our changeovers, ensuring all three spend equal time in the middle.
I have one umpire interested in going to Mortlock, can the rest of you give it some consideration. We are allowed to have two and as I said before it is a great experience to officiate there. Having two umpires at Mortlock also reflects well on our league and as an umpire you will be representing our league with the opportunity of being selected for the State Championships.
The umpires received a query from one of the team captains. The side having kicked a behind had players slow to leave the 15 metre protected when the full back kicked out. The captain asked if the full back could use one of the those players by handball to run the ball out of defence. The simple answer is No and the same applies for a kick out that goes to a player inside the 15 metre protected zone. In the event of a quick kick out, all players inside that 15 metre protected area are deemed 'offside'. If the full back uses a player inside the 15 metre protected area to clear the ball from defence, the umpire will blow his whistle and direct the full back to bring the ball in again.
At all times the umpire should be telling players to 'CLEAR THE 15 METRE PROTECTED AREA' after a behind has been scored.
