THE UNOFFICIAL MATCH REPORT
A recipe for success, 2 unbeaten sides and perfect weather for football.
Kimba replaced their Million $$$ full forward for a Schilling.
Salary cap issues or a niggling hamstring injury - I suspect the latter.
From the opening bounce the game was played at a blistering pace with the skills we know both sides have to the fore.
As Pete Woolford rightly predicted on the Brady And The Professor Podcast, it would be a battle of the defences. The ball was pinging all over the place as players from both sides tried to create scoring opportunities but the defenders were having none it.
The second quarter was much of the same and despite the low scoring (Ranges 3.8 to Kimba 3.3) it was possibly the best half of footy seen for quite some time.
Can you believe neither side managed a goal in the 3rd quarter (just 1 point each).
Holding a slender 5 point lead and with the breeze at their backs Ranges odds shortened dramatically when Jesse Kemp was subbed out of the game with what appeared to be a rib injury.
90% of the last quarter was played in Ranges forward half. Kimba were forced to go wide looking for escape routes but a few wayward kicks went a bit too wide and their defenders were forced to regroup time and again as the “last touch - out of bounds rule” played in favour of Ranges.
Matt Golding, as he did last week, kicked a clutch goal from the boundary to push the margin beyond a goal for the first time in about 90 minutes of football, Pat Jenner (5 goals) followed up with 2 more majors before Rhyce Beinke got in on the act with a late goal.
For Ranges Elliott Claxton was back to his desperate best. And he had plenty of support.
Jack and Thomas Weiss continue to grow in stature, although Jack loses a couple of dream team points for forgetting the guernseys. But for a mad dash back to the hills hoist Ranges might have found themselves playing as skins. Hank Burton, Ree (cool as a cucumber) Martin and Sean Seeley rounded out a near impregnable back six for the Ranges.
Rhyce Beinke, Jack Kenny, Jess Kenny, Adze Hurrell and Brent Gray (great game) were all in ominous form through the middle/forward part of the ground and went from strength to strength the longer the game went.
For the Tigers they were well served by Dale and Reece Rayson, Ryley Maitland, Dion Woolford (2 goals), Ben Clements, Jesse Kemp and Dan Schilling (1 goal).
Goal of the day goes to Joel “Rocco’s Dad” Nield, wending his way through heavy traffic and finishing with a checksider off the outside of the boot was all class.
Congratulations to Kane Schubert who made a quick gear change from umpiring the Senior Colts to take the field with 2 of his sons, Jez and Ned for a game of B Grade. The old stager has still got it.
I wandered down to watch a bit of the C3 netball, and see what all the fuss is about first hand. Walking through the wire mesh gate and out onto to the asphalt was like a vortex to another time another place. How amazing is “Siri”, from nowhere my iPhone starts playing “the old grey mare she ain’t what she used to be, ain’t what she used to be”.
Holly Cowan was on fire shooting at 100%, but it was the familiar umpire calls - Contact wing defence - Contact wing defence that caught my attention - I didn’t even need to look up to know the offender would be Carmen Hampel.
