The group stage of this year’s Men’s NPL Night Series ends on Wednesday night with three of the four semi-final spots still to be confirmed.
So far Inglewood United are the only side guaranteed of a place in the last four. Andres Oliveira’s team qualified from Group A on the back of Steve Sokol’s goal which gave them a 1-0 win over Gwelup Croatia last Friday.
Inglewood are at their Perth Plasterboard Centre Stadium home this Wednesday against Perth Glory, who must win and hope ECU Joondalup and Rockingham City slip up if they are to advance with their opponents.
ECU leapfrogged Rockingham into second place after they defeated Goran Stajic’s side 5-3 last Friday, Chris Harold and Daryl Nicol scoring doubles for the Jacks. The NPL champions will be favourites to complete the job when they face bottom of the group Cockburn City at E&D Litis Stadium. Rockingham, whose fate is now out of their own hands, take on Gwelup at Frank Drago Reserve.
In Group B, Armadale need to avoid a five-goal loss against hosts Bayswater City at Frank Drago Reserve to reach the semis.
The teams were neck and neck before last Friday night’s matches, on the same points and with the same goal difference. But while Armadale were continuing their good form with a 4-1 victory over Balcatta, the wheels came off for Bayswater as they were hammered 6-0 by previously winless Floreat Athena.
That result allowed Perth SC to ease into second place following their 2-0 defeat of Sorrento thanks to goals from Michael Domfeh and Yagoub Mustafa. A win against Balcatta at Perth Plasterboard Centre Stadium will take the holders through to the last four.
Floreat and Sorrento meet in the other Group B tie at E&D Litis Stadium with neither side in a position to qualify.
