20 February 2021
The Mid West Football League held a meeting of Club Presidents, Executive Delegates of the Mid West Netball Association and representatives from each netball club on Thursday the 11th February 2021. SANFL was also represented at the meeting.
The Central Eyre and Wudinna United Football and Netball clubs advised the meeting of their agreement to merge effective immediately. The spokespersons for the new club, Central Eyre United, expressed their desire to play in the Mid West Football League and Netball Association in 2021 providing that there be a viable season of football and netball across all grades. This would give the League and Association 5 teams with the new merged entity and the other 4 clubs being Elliston, West Coast Hawks, Western Districts and Wirrulla.
It became clear from discussions and information presented by each club representative that the viability of a season in Mid West in 2021 was in doubt and a motion was moved that “Given Central Eyre United’s conditions and also given the numbers information from each club, other clubs feel that Mid West should move forward with only a 4 team competition”. This motion was carried by a clear majority of presidents present.
The new Central Eyre United club have since declared their intention to apply to join the Eastern Eyre Football League and Netball Association.
The executive of the Mid West Football League are continuing discussions with the remaining 4 clubs in regards of a competition for 2021. The executive also understand that the remaining 4 clubs are exploring a number of options for their future and hope that announcements about the 2021 season can be made as soon as they are able to be.
The executive of the Mid West Football league are unavailable for further comment until there is a clearer path for the league and clubs involved.
