Harbour players impress on American College debuts
There have been some stunning debut performances by Harbour players in the opening week of the American College season.
Former Harbour Breeze guard Tayla Dalton, scored a team high 16 points in her first outing for St Mary’s College, California despite the Gaels going down 87-79 to Virginia Commonwealth University.
Emme Shearer, a former Breeze and U19 teammate of Tayla scored 14 points (4/5FG, 5/6FT) in her first game for the University of Portland Pilots as they won 82-70 at Seattle.
A third freshman, Sam Mennenga, impressed in his very first outing for Davidson College. The former Westlake forward was close to a double-double posting 12 points (4/6FG) and 9 rebounds as the Wildcats beat High Point 82-73.
All three are playing at NCAA Division I Universities which makes their performances even more meritorious.
In NCAA Division II play Tessa Talo-Tomokino scored her first career points for Northeastern State in the Riverhawks 82-74 win against Missouri Western.
Talo-Tomokino redshirted the 2019-20 season, her first at Northeastern, so it has been a long wait for the shooting guard to get on court. She scored 4 points making both of her shots in 14 minutes of action.
Playing against Tayla was our very own Akiene-Tera Reed. Tera is in her fourth year at VCU and she started off as she had finished last year leading her team to an 81-73 win against St Mary’s. Tera scored a game high 22 points.
In other news from Men’s Division 1 actions St Mary’s College Gaels played three games in a pre-season tournament at Sioux Falls winning two and losing one. Dan Fotu’s best outing was 12 points and 6 rebounds in the 66-64 win against Northern Iowa.
Kruz Perrott-Hunt scored 5 points in consecutive games as South Dakota University went down twice at the Little Apple Classic.
There will be plenty of other Harbour players to report on as the American collegiate season progresses.
Reihana Maxwell Topia (St Francis, Illinois University) will be in action later this week with James Moors (Colorado State University) and Will Heather (Dallas Baptist University tipping off in early December.
Due to COVID restrictions Marvin Williams-Dunn (Ouachita Baptist University), Charlotte Armstrong (Barry University) and Chanel Brodeur-Muir (St Thomas Aquinas College) will not begin their seasons until January.
