Thank you again for the hard work and dedication in delivering COVIDSafe practices at your club. It’s important we don’t let complacency creep in, and that we continue to support the initiatives put in place by the State Government to protect our community. We remind clubs to continue with their COVIDSafe measures including:
- hygiene and cleaning practices
- maintaining physical distancing where possible (including limiting non-essential contact such as hand-shakes, high-fives, hugs etc)
- ensuring density limits are not breached in internal spaces
- reminding players/coaches/volunteers/spectators to not attend training or matches if they are unwell (or if they are a close contact of a suspected or confirmed cased of COVID19 or have attended a location identified as a high risk site and been directed to self-isolate)
Please also note that from midnight August 4, the practice of being seated to consume food and beverage was reintroduced in SA, with the following relevant at sporting clubs:
- Patrons must be seated to consume alcohol
- Patrons can consume snack/hand-held food and non-alcoholic beverages while standing, provided they are in a spectator area at the oval
- Patrons must be seated to consume any beverage (alcoholic/non-alcoholic) and/or food while inside the licenced venue/sporting club
- Patrons must be seated while eating plated food (including in outdoor areas such as beer gardens, balconies etc)
We have updated the SANFL Return to Play website to include posters, suggested social media communication and ground announcements to assist clubs in communicating and managing these changes. The website also includes tools and resources to support clubs promote all COVIDSafe messages and practices, and we encourage you to continue to visit the website regularly.

A COVID Management Plan is required for any venue wishing to host over 1,000 spectators. If your club doesn’t wish to host over 1,000 spectators you can continue operating as per your current COVIDSafe plan. An online education session was conducted last week, with a copy of the webinar recording and supporting materials available on the SANFL Return to Play website. Members of the SANFL team can also review drafts of your plan if desired. Please email your plan to communityfootball@sanfl.com.au if you would like feedback prior to submission. We encourage clubs/leagues to advise SANFL once you have submitted a plan, so we can work with SA Health to triage and fast-track the approval process where possible. We appreciate the significant work required to complete and deliver a plan, and reinforce that this isn’t a compulsory requirement and only needs to be undertaken by venues wishing to host over 1,000 spectators.

BREAKTHROUGH MENTAL HEALTH ROUND

1 WEEK TO GO – REGISTER NOW TO RECEIVE PURPLE AND BLUE ARMBANDS FOR YOUR CLUB https://breakthrough-community-round.raisely.com/ On Saturday 15th August, SANFL will once again be supporting our good friends at Breakthrough Mental Health Research Foundation, by endorsing the Breakthrough Community Round. The aim is for football clubs across South Australia to don the purple and blue armbands, raising awareness to tackle mental health head on.
- With one in five Australians diagnosed with a mental health issue and more people aged between 15-44 years dying from suicide than any other cause – it is imperative we support ground-breaking research to better understand what causes mental illness, how to treat it, and how to prevent it from happening.
- More than 80 clubs took part last year and while we appreciate this season will look a little different thanks to COVID-19 – it’s never been a more important time to support the mental health of your players, officials, volunteers and families that make up the fabric of your community.
- Para Hills Football Club raised more than $15,000 last year by taking part in the round, with veteran player Ryan Rebbeck encouraging other clubs to get behind the initiative. All funds raised will go to fund much-needed mental health research into sport and will directly fund mental health first aid programs across leagues throughout the state https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXKlP8dlgVo&feature=youtu.be
SANFL and Breakthrough Foundation are aware of the difficulties that COVID-19 has placed on so many clubs in 2020 but want to ensure everyone is included in our Community Round. We appreciate any involvement, no matter what that looks like and encourage you to continue the mental health conversation within your clubs to support each other during these challenging times. Sign up and you’ll receive your arm bands as well as a range of tools and resources to help your fundraising efforts. Register here: https://breakthrough-community-round.raisely.com/ For any questions about this campaign please contact Jade Spicer - Community Engagement Specialist on 08 8236 8803 or jspicer@breakthroughfoundation.org.au
