We thank you for playing your part in flattening the curve, and we are optimistic that we will get our game underway at some stage, in some format later this year. Rest assured, SANFL in collaboration with the AFL and its State / Territory affiliates have a small but dedicated team of people working diligently to explore what this might look like for our clubs and communities. We are still uncertain about the exact date of commencement for our game, but we want to provide you with some certainty about the actions and next steps that SANFL are taking as part of a national approach
- We are constantly reviewing the situation and the different levels of advice being provided by State / Territories and Federal Government.
- We are developing key principles of decision making for a return to football around Government policies and restrictions, guidance for schools, workplaces and medical recommendations.
- We are paying close attention to international benchmarks and behaviours, and how other countries, who are ahead of Australia, are treating their return to sport and socialisation.
- We are working closely with Government, medical advisors and the AFL’s Chief Medical Officer to ensure we have the very latest advice and insight around when we may be able to utilise relaxations to kick off our game.
- We are exploring modified formats and preparing extensive modelling around innovative alternatives in our endeavours to get a season underway in 2020.
- We are preparing a series of protocols that will provide guidance for when football does return.
- We are constantly engaging with as many of our Leagues and Clubs as possible, to understand your concerns and considerations.
- Importantly, we have not given up on this season. We are optimistic that we will be back on the field as soon as we have the green light and you can be confident that you will have our full support to ensure this return is as safe and well prepared as possible.
We are aiming to provide a more detailed update at the end of April, to align with an expected roadmap for the elite game. We thank you once again for your patience and understanding during this uncertain and unprecedented time.

The AFL and SANFL are supporting #PlayForLives, a new charity that connects Charities in need with local sporting clubs. As you may know, COVID-19 is putting many charity organisations under pressure. In part, this is because many of those that volunteer with them are over 65 and in a very high-risk group, so they’re now unable to continue with their usual work. In conjunction with the AFL and several other major sporting codes, #PlayForLives is getting Australia’s sporting organisations and athletes mobilised to fill many volunteer positions left vacant in the wake of the pandemic. #PlayforLives is a great opportunity to maintain that connection with your teammates, and to harness the energy of your club. CLICK HERE to learn more, and to register your club to participate.

Round 3 of the ORSR Grassroots Football, Cricket & Netball Fund Facilities Program is now open, with applications closing at midday (12:00pm) on Thursday 30 April 2020. This Program assists Clubs and Councils to develop core infrastructure that directly impacts participation through rational development of good quality, well designed and utilised facilities The majority of clubs and councils who apply are required to contribute at least 50 per cent of the project costs and need to work with the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing South Australian National Football League (SANFL), South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) and Netball SA to produce the best application possible. The AFL Community Relief Fund has been established by the AFL to support local communities in fire affected areas to repair and rebuild their football clubs, including helping footballing families in these impacted communities. The Australian Olympic Committee, Paralympics Australia, Commonwealth Games Australia and the Australian Sports Foundation (The Recovery Through Sport Alliance) now invite applications from community sports clubs and others affected during the recent summer of natural disasters. The Sport Recovery Grants will be focusing on the organisations and community members who have been affected by the recent bushfires. Suggested grant values are up to $20,000. The Australian Sports Foundation can also assist with tax deductible fundraising for your club. Speak to the Sports Foundation’s SA Partnership Manager, Michael Burke, on 0408 680 122 or michael@sportsfoundation.org.au. REGISTRATION FEES & OTHER FAQs
SANFL, in consultation with AFL and all other State/Territory Bodies recommend that clubs hold player registration fees until the season is completed. Whilst we are all working toward recommencement on May 31, Leagues may also be exploring the possibility to extend the season. Given the uncertainty around the length of seasons, we recommend clubs hold player registration fees and revisit this issue at the end of season once the season structure has been confirmed. Further to the above, the same principle applies with respect to the Player Registration Fee ($15/$10 for Adult/Junior). More information will be provided regarding this matter once we have confirmed when/if football recommences. Visit the SANFL Covid-19 FAQ web page for any other queries you may have.

SANFL are working closely with the AFL and the national insurer (Marsh Insurance) to provide relief to clubs for 2020 insurance. At this point in time, the informal advice is that there will be a level of discount on Personal Accident/Injury Cover, however the Public Liability component will remain in full. We will update clubs and leagues as soon as there is further clarity.
