As you are now aware, there has been a recommendation via media release, (strong recommendation), released today from SANFL that all Country Leagues are postponed until May 31, including all training sessions.
Just to clarify messaging on the strong recommendation:
This is a governance matter, affiliated leagues are governed by their own boards or League Executive teams, and there is nothing in the regulations that specifically allows SANFL to enforce postponement on those leagues. This is consistent with AFL advice and the national messaging on this matter.
However, not only would a non-consistent approach be against all expert advice - Medical, AFL and SANFL - it may present issues with insurance or similar, and It could also potentially expose the league and/or clubs to other risks and challenges.
Leagues and clubs are strongly recommended to follow this direction.
It is important to remember what the intent is as a result of this recommendation – it is intended to keep our communities safe with individuals and their families safety, health & wellbeing at the forefront.
These decisions have been made by SANFL, as part of a national working group including the AFL and other State football bodies, which involved detailed consideration of the situation regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19) and following advice from the Australian Government, World Health Organisation and AFL’s Chief Medical Officers regarding best practice.
Ultimately this decision has been made with a thorough understanding of the challenges it creates, but most importantly the best interests of all players, coaches, umpires, officials, staff and volunteers at the forefront.
Netball: While Netball SA have not officially provided direction, given the above information, it would be prudent for EP Netball to fall in line with the football recommendations given their close alignment. I believe most of you have already held conversations with your netball executives.
In summary, nothing is more important than the health and well-being of our football, (and netball), participants and the wider community that we are all a part of, and as a result, I look forward to a positive response and support of the proposed guidelines and recommendations.
I will keep you updated as the week progresses, and will assist each individual League and their clubs work through concerns in the coming days/weeks. Please feel free to call me directly with any questions in the meantime.
