Season wrap on Harbour NCAA Div I athletes
The college season in the USA finished abruptly last week due to the increased COVID-19 public health threat.
Almost all the women’s conference tournaments were completed before the shut-down but many of the Men’s conferences were affected mid-tournament.
Here is how the college season finished for the Harbour NCAA Division I athletes.
Akiene-Tera Reed (Virginia Commonwealth University)
It was a game that featured eleven lead changes but it just wasn’t to be for Tera Reed and Virginia Commonwealth as they fell 52-48 to #1 Dayton in the Atlantic 10 Tournament Championship Game. Tera finished the encounter with 11 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists. It was heartache for VCU who had to settle for second spot last season when they were beaten in the final by Fordham University.
Tera’s fine season saw her named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team after once again leading VCU in scoring, averaging 15.2 points per game.
Zara Jillings (Fordham University Rams)
Fordham had met Tera Reed and Virginia Commonwealth the day earlier in the Atlantic 10 Conference semi-final. Fordham were the defending champions, and had beaten VCU in the 2019 final, but were beaten 60-55 on this occasion. Zara Jillings grabbed 4 rebounds and a free-throw for Fordham.
The dependable sixth-man for the Rams was also named to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team.
Yanni Wetzell (San Diego State University)
San Diego State Aztecs, the Mountain West Conference regular season champions, entered the MWC Tournament as hot favourites boasting an overall record of 28-1 and a conference win-loss of 17-1. They progressed reasonably comfortably to the final but once there were upset 59-56 with opponents Utah who nailed a 3-pointer with 2.5 seconds left on the clock to clinch the title.
Yanni, in his last year of collegiate basketball, was denied a first trip to the NCAA Tournament with the cancellation of the tournament and all other American college sport.
Yanni led the Aztecs in rebounding collecting 6.5 boards per game and scoring 11.5 points per outing.
Matt Freeman (UC Santa Barbara University)
Matt Freeman was also playing his final season of college basketball but unfortunately the Big West Conference Tournament was cancelled before UCSBU even got a chance to play a game. They finished the regular season with a 10-6 record – Matt averaging 9.4 points and 4.2 rebounds per game.
Dan Fotu (St Mary’s College, California)
St Mary’s were defeated by highly ranked Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference Championship game going down 84-66 to the #2 ranked team in the country. Due to injuries in the St Mary’s camp Dan was forced to play as an undersized 4/5 for most of the season. He put up excellent numbers under the circumstances playing all 32 games and averaging 6.4 points and 3.4 rebounds – his field goal percentage of 64.7% was the highest on the team.
Sam Waardenburg (University of Miami)
Miami bowed out in the second round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament falling 69-64 to Clemson. Sam took his career rebounding tally past 250 with a team high 8 rebounds and also had 3 steals and a block in 32 minutes of action. Sam led Miami in rebounding pulling down 6.0 boards per game and also added 6 points per game.
Kruz Perrott-Hunt (South Dakota University)
South Dakota were upset 74-71 by North Dakota in the Summit League Tournament first round. Kruz, a freshman guard, played 22 games averaging 1.5 points and 1.1 assists per game.
