Chanel Brodeur-Muir and Yanni Wetzell claim honours

It’s been a busy week for Harbour athletes in the States, the highlight being a title win for  Chanel Brodeur-Muir a conference award for Yanni Wetzell.

Chanel and St Thomas Aquinas College finished the East Coast Conference regular season in style winning 66-49. The win gave the Spartans a share of the regular season title and #1 seeding ahead of the play-offs.

Yanni has this week been named to the All-Mountain West Conference Third Team. San Diego State, the regular season champions, enter the Mountain West Conference Tournament as red hot favourites boasting an overall record of 28-1 and a conference win-loss of 17-1. Their 28th win of the season was at Nevada (83-76) with Yanni adding 6 rebounds, a steal and a block to 8 points.

Unlucky for some but not Dan Fotu who collected 13 points (6/7FG) as St Mary’s accounted for Santa Clara 78-72. He also added 4 rebounds.

St Mary’s finished in third place in the West Coast Conference regular season after going down 86-76 to top seeded Gonzaga – 8 points for Fotu in that one. St Mary’s (11-5) head directly to the West Coast Conference quarter finals against a yet to be decided opponent.

In a match up involving three Kiwis Matt Freeman (8 points) and UC Santa Barbara got the better of UC Riverside 65-60. For Riverside Callum McRae filled the stats line with 18 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks and fellow sophomore Angus McWilliam had 5 points and 4 rebounds.

Sam Waardenburg and University of Miami travel to Georgia Tech for their final ACC regular season game this week with a 6-12 conference record ahead of tournament play.

Kruz Perrott-Hunt  and University of South Dakota (10-6) will carry third seeding into the Summit League play-offs where they will take on #6 North Dakota later this week.

Will Heather and Dallas Baptist will carry #6 seeding into the Lone Star Conference Championship where they will meet Oklahoma Christian.

The season came to an end for Joel Coffey and Webber International when they fell 97-64 to St Thomas in the quarter-final of the Sun Conference Tournament. Joel swatted away a couple of blocks and garnered 2 rebounds in the defeat.

Hoping to go one better than last season when they finished runners-up at the Atlantic 10 Championship Akiene-Tera Reed and Virginia Commonwealth will face the winner of the first round game between Davidson and La Salle. VCU finished second in the regular season with a 13-3 record.

Meanwhile Zara Jillings and Fordham University, the Atlantic 10 defending champions, take on St Joseph’s in the first round of the play-offs. Fordham finished third in the regular season with an 11-5 record.

Charlotte Armstrong equalled her career best when snaring 12 rebounds for Barry University Buccaneers. Unfortunately the Buccs were pipped 66-65 by Nova Southeastern. The Buccs finished with a 5-16 record in the Sunshine State Conference and failed to make the play-offs.

The season has finished for Olivia Bell and Peru State who needed to win their final Heart of America Athletic Conference game to advance to the play-offs. Unfortunately Peru were defeated 76-56 by William Penn University.

The season is also over for Tessa Talo-Tomokino. Her Northeaster State team finished with a 3-16 record in the Mid-American Intercollegiate Conference, a record not good enough to carry them forward to end of season tournament play.
