In the final days of the 2010's we took a look back at the story of the decade that was. We reviewed some of the key team statistics and best player performances of the decade that was 2010-2019.
It was a decade that saw the League establish itself again as the premier football and netball competition in the Gippsland region and reach it's peak as a business. Here we look back at the senior football product that has been key to the Leagues success and the teams and players that have helped define the last decade.
First up is the most games played in the decade.
17 players featured in over 150 games in the decade. Maffra (Bedggood, O'Brien, Gieschen & Porter), Sale (Laverty, Martin, Fyfe & Lipman) and Moe (Ainsworth, Wood, Blaser, Long) all had four players pass the 150 game mark.
Maffra's Daniel Bedggood played the most games in the decade with 197, he managed 7 seasons over the 20 game mark including three premierships in the decade.
Most goals in the decade.
Only 9 players kicked over 200 goals in the decade. Maffra (Bedggood, Sheen & Bennett) had three. Sale (Ferguson & Gooch) and Leongatha (Dunne & Maskell) both had two players pass the 200 goal mark.
Maffra's Daniel Bedggood again led the catagory in the decade with 396, he managed 2 seasons over the 50 goal mark and finished top 5 in the Lawless award 5 times.
Here are the players that delivered in front of goals this decade.
Chris Dunne (2016 ,2018), Darren Sheen (2013, 2014) and Matt Ferguson (2011, 2012) all claimed multiple Lawless Awards as the League's top goalkicker.
All stats here including finals for that year. Darren Sheen passed the 100 mark twice in 2013 (107) & 2014 (111). Both Matt Ferguson (95 in 2012) and Jake Best (91 in 2015) were the only other players to kick 90 goals in a season. Chris Dunne finished top 5 in the League in every season he played for both Drouin and Leongatha.
Anthony Rocca led the goals per game stat with 8 goals in his only game. Darren Sheen finished averaging over 4 goals per game from players who kicked over 50 goals the only other player to average over 4 goals was Moe's Ryan Donaldson who kicked 74 goals over two seasons at the Lions.
Here are the players that featured in their teams best players the most this decade.
Trood Award and Rodda medalists Kelvin Porter and Kane Martin have been standouts throughout the 2010's and it is reflected here.
11 players have been in the best over 75 times including Kelvin Porter (108), Kane Martin (104), Bob McCallum (92), James Blaser (90), Peter Ainsworth (90), Aiden Lindsay (84), Jordan Dessent (82),
Joel Soutar (78), David Olsen (78), Jackson Hall (77) & Tom Marriott (75).
Some amazing stats here with Warragul's Brad Scalzo leading the way featuring in the Gul's best in nearly 80% of his games played.
Martin (65%), Porter (64%) and Marriott (61%) all feature in the top 10. Out of the qualified players, Nate Paredes average the highest points per game when he featured in the best players (4.6/2nd best) followed by Col Sanbrook (4.45), James Gibbs (4.35) and Mark Collison (4.32).
We did set a minimum qualification of 50 games played for this stat.
On to the Trood Award and Rodda Medal for the League's best and fairest player. Not many surprises here in the top few.
Pat McGrath leads the way for most votes polled with two clubs polling 60 votes for both Drouin and Leongatha. Jack Lipman (78), Joel Soutar (77) and James Blaser (76) also polled over 70 votes for the decade.
The final of our player stats and it is the Trood and Rodda key stats for the decade. 539 players polled votes in the decade.
Jacob Wood and Kane Martin end up the only players to poll in every year of the decade. Wonthaggi's Lucas White polled the most votes in a season without winning polling 22 in 2012 with Mark Collison (2015) & Ed Carr (2018) also polling 21 and finishing runner up.
Sale had the most winners with 3 (Collins, Martin, Lipman) followed by Drouin (Soumilas, McCallum) and Maffra (Jones, Porter) on 2.
On to our team stats and here is the story of the 2010's.
Maffra dominate the decade winning the most premierships and appearing in the most number of Grand Finals.
Seven teams appeared in a Grand Final this decade with all ten teams tasting finals action at least once.
To round out the 2010's we have the ladder of the decade. No surprises with Maffra and Leongatha at the top of the table as it has been for the past 4 years.
5 clubs have won premierships. All 10 clubs have appeared in the finals. The Eagles started and closed the decade as champions with Sale, Morwell, Traralgon and Leongatha all tasting success in between.
