Rewards and Awards for Dan Fotu and Yanni Wetzell
Dan Fotu, after a career-best performance, was named St Mary’s Student-Athlete of the Week. Dan compiled his first double-double for the Gaels in their 71-63 win against Pacific. He finished with 16 points (7/10FG) and 10 rebounds. St Mary’s are third on the West Coast Conference standings with an 8-4 record.
Yanni Wetzell and the San Diego State Aztecs have clinched the Mountain West Conference regular season title with four games still to play.
The title success is on the back of a 15-0 record in conference play coupled with a remarkable unbeaten 26-0 record overall – the only unbeaten team in NCAA Division I Men’s basketball.
The clincher was an 82-59 home win against New Mexico with Wetzell contributing 20 points (7/9FG) and 9 rebounds.
“I think pretty early on I thought this team could be pretty special,” reflected Wetzell after receiving his championship medal.
After enduring a difficult 2018-19 season at Vanderbilt Wetzell transferred to San Diego for his final season of college basketball. In complete contrast to his junior year at Vanderbilt, where the Commodores failed to win a single conference game, the opposite is true with San Diego who are yet to lose one.
“I got here in the summer with a bunch of guys and I knew we had great pieces from the get-go. I think it’s a credit to the recruitment and just the way, across the board, how deep we are,” said the former Westlake Boys High forward.
His 20 points equaled his career high for the third time this season – he has scored in double figures on 17 occasions in 25 games this season. Averaging 12 points per game he sits third on the Aztecs scoring list this season and with 6.5 boards leads the team’s rebounding statistical category.
Matt Freeman came up with 10 points and 7 rebounds but UC Santa Barbara (5-5 in the Big West Conference) fell 84-75 to UC Davis.

Webber International felt the heat in the Sun Conference falling 85-75 to Warner University. Joel Coffey came up with 5 points, 3 rebounds and 3 blocks for Webber.
Akiene-Tera Reed scored a game high 22 points (6/11FG, 10/11FT) to go with 6 rebounds and 3 steals as Virginia Commonwealth beat St Bonaventure 56-47. Capping a good week Tera compiled a team high 19 points despite VCU falling 72-67 at Atlantic-10 Conference leaders Dayton.
Charlotte Armstrong only played 12 minutes in Barry’s 54-42 win against Palm Beach Atlantic but she was highly productive in that time claiming 3 offensive rebounds to accompany 3 defensive boards as well as scoring 5 points, dishing an assist and claiming a block. Barry University are now 5-11 in Sunshine State Conference play.
