Career high performances from Freeman, Coffey and Heather

It has been a good week for a number of Harbour athletes playing American university basketball. Amongst other news Matt Freeman, Joel Coffey and William Heather all posted career high numbers.

“I consider myself one of the team leaders and to be that, I need to make free throws down the stretch. Tonight I did and this was a big win for us,” reflected Matt Freemanafter he had made four free-throws in the final 8 seconds to guide UC Santa Barbara to a 64-60 win at Cal State Bakersfield.

Freeman finished with a career high 19 points on 4 from 5 shooting from beyond the three point arc and 7 from 7 free-throws.

Sam Waardenburghad a good night as Miami University secured an impressive 81-79 victory at Illinois in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The former Rangitoto College standout added a season high 12 points to 8 rebounds in 34 minutes of playing time. Waardenburg was an efficient 4 from 7 from the field including 2 from 4 from beyond the arc.

San Diego State’s 59-57 win against San Jose State propelled them to No24 on the latest NCAA Div I rankings list. Yanni Wetzellhad 8 points and 3 rebounds as the Aztecs move to 10-0 for the first time since 2010.

Freshman guard Kruz Perrott-Hunt, making his third consecutive start for South Dakota, scored 7 points and also dished 3 assists as the Coyotes beat Mount Marty 94-79 to improve their record to 7-3.

Joel Coffeyhad a big defensive night as Webber International beat Carolina Christian 106-71. In addition to securing 6 rebounds the former Westlake centre swatted a career high 7 blocked shots. He also scored 4 points for the Warriors. 

Also with a career best was Will Heatherwho scored 17 points (8/11FG) to propel Dallas Baptist to a second overtime road win in three days. Making the 84-82 win against Angelo State even sweeter was the fact that it was a second consecutive conference win. 

Akiene-Tera Reed, the Virginia Commonwealth leading scorer, scored a team high 14 points (6/14FG) but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Rams going down 69-55 to William and Mary. The Rams wing added 3 rebounds, 2 assists and a pair of steals.
