Congratulations to Longwarry who won the 2019 Parklea senior EDFL grand final this afternoon at Dowton Park Yarragon in perfect conditions and in front of big crowd. After leading by nine points at half time in a first half that only yielded five goals the Crows kicked three unanswered goals in the third quarter to set up a match winning 27 point lead at the last break. It then drove home their advantage with a four goal to two last term to win by 39 points. It has been 51 years since Longwarry’s last won a flag and that was in 1968 and when in the West Gippsland League.
Commiserations to Ellinbank who were the minor premiers. It pushed the Crows until half time but tired in the second half.
Ellinbank applied plenty of pressure early and with a goal to key tall Tommy Johnson and the only goal in the first quarter it went into quarter time break with four point lead. In the second quarter goals by Brayden McHugh, Daniel Fry and Tye Holland gave the Crows a handy nine point lead in a match dominated by defence. After the main break the Longwarry rattled on three unanswered goals to seize control largely led by fleet footed runners Riley Rundell, Kane Oldham, Danny Wells and half backs Cole Cook and Anthony Salce. The Crows back six led by Ben Cuckson, Nick Walsh and Justin Mccleary seldom put a foot wrong and restricted the Eagles to only two goals by the last break. The first goal of the last term was vital and it was kicked by Crow stalwart Tye Holland from a difficult angle to put an end to Ellinbank’s hopes. Thereafter the Eagles refused to throw in the towel but could not make any impression on the deficit. Ellinbank coach Ben Wragg tried hard to inspire his side, across half back Jake Harper, Mark Vassett and Josh Peterson offered plenty of resistance while Blake Notman and Mitch Farthing were busy in and around the middle. Speedy Longwarry wingman Riley Rundell won the AFL Vic Country BOG medal.
Longwarry also won the U18 flag after a heart stopping two point victory over a wayward kicking Poowong that sprayed a few late shots on goal. Crow tall Angus Adamiak was awarded the AFL Vic Country BOG medal.
It wasn’t all bad on grand final day for Ellinbank as they won the Reserves grand final with an emphatic 49 point victory over Longwarry - making it back to back premiers for the Eagle reserves.
In the U16’s Buln Buln preserved its undefeated record this season beating a plucky Ellibank by 12 points. Buln Buln’s Gaige White was awarded the EDFL BOG medal.
