A host of current or former Harbour players were playing for New Zealand on the international basketball stage last week.

The Tall Blacks were in Australia playing Canada and are currently in China preparing for the FIBA World Cup that begins at the weekend. Also in China were the NZ Women’s 3x3 team. The U17 Men’s and Women’s teams were at the Oceania Championships in New Caledonia and finally the U18 Men’s and Women’s teams were at the Asia Cup in Malaysia.

That’s six New Zealand teams playing in four different countries with a total of 50 players on international duty. Significantly there were 18 Harbour players wearing the black singlet. Put another way that’s 36% of the playing personnel were Harbour representatives, a remarkably high percentage from one association.

So who are the 18 players and which teams were they playing for?

MBO Tall Blacks 

Pride of place goes to Taine Murray – the 17 year old made his senior international debut last week against Canada. 

Tom Abercrombie, Jarrod Kenny, Tai Webster, Corey Webster, Isaac Fotu and Rob Loe also played against Canada and are now in China ahead of the Tall Blacks World Cup opener against Brazil.

 NZ U17 Men

The NZ U17 Men, who won silver at the FIBA Oceania Championships in New Caledonia, contained a quartet of Harbour U19 players – Campbell Atkinson, Sean Murphy, Harry Payne and Reihana Maxwell-Topia.

 NZ U17 Women

Jess Moors was the sole Harbour representative in the U17 Women’s team that also won silver in Nouméa.

Three New Zealand 3x3 teams were in action over the weekend and each had a pair of Harbour players in their four-player squads.

In addition to the 18 players three Harbour coaches were also on international assignments. 

Bronwen Davidson was an assistant with the U17 Women’s team and Matt Lacey was an assistant with the U17 Men’s team.

In addition Justine Reed was head coach of the NZ Women’s 3x3 team in Malaysia.
