Perth Soccer Club are champions again after they put themselves out of reach with a 2-0 win at Armadale on the weekend.

Ramon Falzon’s side moved 10 points clear of the field with two matches to go as they wrapped up a third NPL WA title in four seasons.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling, incredibly happy … enormously proud of all the boys,” the Azzurri head coach said.

“They’ve been putting in a hard shift since early December, so to see them actually improving from last year (is fantastic).”

The last three NPL WA title races have gone to the wire, with the team on top heading into the final round of fixtures missing out. Not this season. Perth have been dominant in every respect in going back-to-back. They have led since Round Five, they are the league’s top scorers and they boast the meanest defence with just 15 goals conceded in 20 matches.

“For once we took the lead (in the title race) early on and held on to it, so definitely in terms of maturity our boys stepped up big time this year,” Falzon added.  

Saturday’s goals were scored by Andreas Theodosiades and Frank Furfaro and Perth even had the luxury of seeing Harley Orr miss two penalties.

Theodosiades said with the Top Four Cup on the horizon, there was no chance of them taking their foot off the gas.

“In the past we’ve done the Double, so we want to maintain that record,” he said.

“We’ve just got that winning mentality, so even the next two (league) games I don’t think we’re going to let up. It’s just been instilled in the club, the culture, it starts from the president (Gary Marocchi) down … so I think we’re pretty motivated, to be fair.”

Perth’s nearest rivals Floreat suffered a surprise 2-1 home loss to ECU Joondalup. This was only the fourth win of the season for the Jacks but it moved them four points clear of Stirling Lions, who occupy the sole relegation spot.

Second bottom Armadale are a point and 13 goals better off than Stirling, who will probably have to win at least one of their final two matches to retain their top-flight status following Saturday’s defeat to Inglewood United.

One club that did ensure their survival were Cockburn City, who won at Perth Glory on Sunday. Rockingham City should have enough in the bank despite losing heavily at Bayswater City, for whom the league’s top scorer Daryl Nicol scored a hat-trick.

The win took Bayswater to fourth, with Balcatta and Sorrento on their heels after the two sides drew 2-2 at Grindleford Reserve.
