The Hawks stumble in the shadows of the finals, down by 23 points at the Magpie Nest, Tigers tune up for their campaign against a gallant undermanned Roosters at Minnipa and Centrals big wheels keep turning, downing the Bombers by a convincing 67 points at the Hangar.
All attention to Wudinna as the visiting Hawks had their depth tested, many key outs – Iluka shutdown and unavailable players not covered this time around. The Magpies great all day, scores level at three quarter time, the first time the Hawks have been seriously challenged all year. Remarkably the Hawks were kept scoreless in the last quarter, the only time for the year as the Maggies kicked three goals five themselves.
Cunning old coach Du Bois shuffled his players away from usual positions with huge dividends. Dan Foster magnificent, moving to the backlines for the first time in many years, Jonty Seal also moved, playing on the wing and a prolific ball winner, Ian Jericho a general in defence and time to time on the ball, Neil Seaman a move forward, three goals and energy lifting those around him, Rick Seal another effective outing, three goals and slick with his hands, Brayden Chambers likely his best game for the year. Tyson Jackson back in the side and will be better for the run, arrived at half time straight from Scotland, hopping across the world. Suspiciously sun tanned, has he really been in the Bahamas? Brad Lymn with three goals continues his fast rise, and Izaac Boylan another big match.
Jack Burton again leading the Hawks, he has had a stellar year, apart from injury at Mortlock providing a set back and no doubt Eyre Peninsula representation. Dylan Kelsh in ruck gave his all as always, Cameron Montgomerie, three goals and spending most of his time forward these days, he never plays a bad game, Joe Mc Innis speed and creativity again on show, Dillon Cabot looking supremely fit, won plenty of it and works hard. Hawks could not get their legendary run going, but wont despair this loss, less pressure heading into the finals where they remain a strong favourite.
The Bulldogs kept their mojo going, big winners at Wirrulla, the Bombers always a tough assignment anytime! Centrals quieter in the third quarter but otherwise the match was played on their terms, coach Wagner will be pleased given all the pieces are coming together nicely for finals around the corner.
Dominant game by Clint Winter, seven goals and outstanding. His silky smooth skills just couldnt be stopped! Jake Sampson in and at it all day, his is a big mover in the Centrals engine room, leader by deeds and held in high respect across the League. Jared Sampson good all day, seems to be a barometer, when he plays well the team generally wins, hit targets and lifts those around him, Ty Mc Kenna having quite a season himself, missed last year and the dogs look menacing when he gets his hands to the footy, Kane Sampson running around like a teenager, spending time around the midfield and forward again, appearing to enjoy his footy. Jordan Stutley three goals and keen reader of the play. Strong body and great kick.
The Bombers didn’t have enough winners collectively but have wonderful contributors week in week out. Mitch Gum works so hard and a complete two sided player, effective all day, Matt Kelsh with strength, wins the hard ball and always around the contest, Dan Theunans welcome back to assist in the ruck, Ryleigh Myles, captain and another who loves the contest, hard at it and shirks nothing. Jack Evans played a great game and has acquitted himself well all year. Simon Webb three goals, a go to target, if only the ball could find itself to his general area more!
The Roosters travelled to Minnipa to take on the Tigers smarting somewhat after a smack by the Hawks last week, so a quick bounce back is just what coach Feltus was looking for. Scotty making his moves from the unaccustomed position on the bench this week with a hammy concern, and would have been pleased with what he saw, particularly after half time.
Tigers big guns all firing, Broadie Chandler in the middle, hard and tough, Charlie Williams plenty of it, Braydn Hedley-King speed to burn, his ability to run away from the contest is breath taking, Thomas Lee and marking target, but covers the ground so well, Shannon Horgan dominated his wing, a prime mover all day, Andrew Miller marked everything and kicked five in a great display of what a key forward should do, Damon King O’Loughlin also a highly effective forward with four, both key targets never competing against each other in a well drilled display.
Roosters undermanned but fought on bravely. Matt Williams as always gave his all and gathered huge possessions across the ground, Ben Hurrell very welcome back in the side, handles the ball well and stopped many Tigers moves, Dale Bache continues his great season, poised with it and enjoys a contest. Ross Bascomb mainly deep in defence had plenty to do, and makes good decisions. His ability to turn defence into attack was responsible for many Rooster forays forward. Steve Paul always leading from the front, Kyle Grant – Cook show class and dash, Gorn Tree a hard worker quick with his hands and taking contested marks.
Tigers eye the finals with some expectation this year, their appointment with Central Eyre at Kyancutta next week will indicate were both clubs are on the eve of the major round.
