Wolves Split Huge QF Night 1-1
Lady Wolves Look to Bounce Back at Bendat
The Chambers Franklyn Joondalup City Wolves women’s team will be looking to force a three game quarter final series after falling to the Perry Lakes Hawks 66-102 on Saturday night at HBF Arena.
Despite losing game one at home in front of a season-high x828 fans, Coach Charles Nix is bullish about his teams’ ability to bounce back on the road.
“I’m confident that we can turn it around, if we are able to click and put the ball in the hole to force a game 3 at home, we are every chance to advance.”
Amber Land and Izzy Miotti were the best on the night for the Wolves, scoring 12 and 10 respectively.
Jamie Cherry starred for the Hawks scoring 28 points with a massive six steals.
Joondalup will be keeping a close eye on Cherry in game two with Coach Nix saying, “we’ll make her work for everything she gets.”
Perry Lakes came out swinging in the first quarter getting out to an early 2-16 lead before the Wolves could get any sort of consistent offense.
Although the Wolves finished strong, putting together an 11-2 run to set a 13-20 score line heading into quarter time.
A little boy wandered onto the court to force a stoppage in play at the beginning of the second quarter.
He checked back out of the game with no points scored.
The Hawks then put the foot down to stretch their lead out to 16 at half time, 23-39.
Unfortunately for the Wolves, it was more of the same in the second half after they couldn’t slow down the Perry Lakes momentum.
The third quarter ended with the Wolves fouling on a three-point attempt giving the Hawks three free throws on the third quarter buzzer.
The teams went into the final break with the score at 40-71.
Perry Lakes would then cruise to victory in the fourth quarter, beating Joondalup 66-102.
The teams will face off again in game two of the quarter finals at Bendat Basketball Centre, at 7pm on Friday August 9.
Should there be a game three, keeping the Lady Wolves alive in 2019, the Wolfpack will return to HBF Arena at 7pm on Saturday August 10.
Wolfpack Men Take Game One
The Chambers-Franklyn Joondalup City Wolves Men’s team won game one of their quarter finals matchup with Kalamunda Eastern Suns 112-95 on Saturday night at HBF Arena.
Six of the Wolfpack got into double figures, led by Earnest Ross Jr who scored 21 points, while grabbing nine rebounds and six assists.
He was joined by Ben Ironmonger (16), Trian Iliadis and Rob Huntington (15), Kevin Davis (13), and Ridell Camidge (11).
Huntington’s 15 was particularly impressive because he made all of his five shots, including three from long range, and both of his free throws.
Coach Ben Ettridge says they’ll be looking for Huntington, Davis and third big man Damian Matacz inside in game two in Kalamunda.
“We will be pounding the ball inside. Robbie, KD and Damo have the advantage in the paint. The process remains the same for us. They are the ones who have to change how they have played all season to combat what we have done for a long time. The team is locked in for game two already.”
While our Wolfpack had a strong team outing, the star of the night was Kalamunda’s Javion Blake who racked up a huge 43 points.
Carl Aylett and Ryan Blanchett were also strong for the Suns, getting 19 and 14 respectively.
Joondalup started strong but Kalamunda finished the first quarter with a 17-4 run, giving them a 19-24 lead at quarter time.
The Suns started the second quarter with a handful of three pointers that got them out to a 10-point lead until Ben Ironmonger willed the Wolfpack back into the game.
Ironmonger scored nine points in quick succession to bring the game back to 38-42, however the Wolves couldn’t manage to take back the lead, heading into half time 52-57.
Coach Ettridge said his message at half time was to stick to their process and “the results will speak for themselves.”
What followed was a 24-4 run to start the third quarter to give Joondalup a comfortable 76-61 lead.
The scoring was fairly spread during this run with Ironmonger and Iliadis getting into double figures and Ross getting his first three of the game.
We also saw the rare site of Kevin Davis connecting from deep late in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter the Wolves managed to stretch their lead out to 22 points and their largest lead of the game.
Joondalup then cruised to victory 112-85 and claimed game one in the first round of the finals.
Game two takes place on Saturday, August 10 at Ray Owen Sports Centre, Lesmurdie.
Should a game three be required, the teams will return to HBF Arena on Sunday, August 11 at 12pm.
