At completion of this week’s round ten, Mid West takes a mid season break as the Under 17s take centre stage at Karkoo next weekend and then the State Country Championships at Port Pirie the following weekend.
Bombers fall agonisingly close again, down by two goals to the improving Magpies. Centrals continue their winning form, this time against the Tigers and wrestling back second spot in the process. Hawks adding another big win to their impressive record, this week against an undermanned Rooster outfit at Streaky Bay.
Important clash at Wirrulla with the winner first dibs on a finals spot, still plenty of football in the season yet though. Ian Jericho leading the way for the Maggies, half back and occasionally in the ruck, Cody Boylan a big game rucking, Izaac Boylan another complete game, air and on the deck, Remi North dangerous all day, Matt Greatbatch always plays at his best against his old club, in and at the contest and Dan Foster, wonderful target forward and mercurial. High flyer Henry Zwar with three goals and Jeffrey Hutt also three, using his leg speed to great advantage.
Bombers are in every game, and Simon Webb did his very best to get them in front, six big goals. Ryan Watson a typically highly effective contributor, Mitch Gum silky smooth ball handling and speed, Rowan Chester a great game, doesn’t mind winning the ball tough, and sets up those around him, Ryleigh Myles and Matt Kelsh continuing their excellent form
The Bulldogs reasserted their winning ways over the Tigers after the Tigers broke a long term win drought last round. The damper conditions proving difficult where Districts like to control the footy with a shorter game, Centrals ability to adapt assisted by strong bodies also. Jesse Stringer heading the best players after rumoured injury concerns leading into the match. Jared Sampson again high in the best, the run and carry of Corey Waters and captain Jake Sampson, Ty Mc Kenna dominant around the ground and forward, three very handy goals.
Districts hit early with the withdrawal of Scott Feltus, a rare missed game from the champion. Broadie Chandler good around the centre, highly skilled and penetrating kick, Kevin Brands excellent all day, along with reliable Joe Williams heading up the backline. Zane Montgomerie is so important to the tigers stocks, plays tall and small at the same time, Shannon Horgan another hard at it match. The Tigers just cant seem to string four good quarters together against the Bulldogs, only a couple of goals down at three quarter time, the match slipped for their grasp thereafter. Some homework needed as likely these two will go head to head at some point in finals!
The Hawks just went about their business against an undermanned Hawks at Streaky Bay, young Roosters tried hard but couldn’t match the all round speed and class of the home team
Jess Kenny and Jake Mc Evoy prolific ball winners across centre, fed by big man Dylan Kelsh., Zac Lovegrove an exceallent forward target, on the lead, and also some fantastic contested marking, five goals but could well have been more, Marc Mc Evoy drifting forward and a host of runners. Braden Holmes retaining his narrow lead in the JH Mc Kenna Trophy with five majors, Jake Mc Evoy five, Jess Kenny three. Notable was the absence of all four Montgomerie brothers, Tyson, Kirk, Dillon and Cameron, the first time Geoff and Rosalie haven’t had family representation since, well, way back in the olden days!
The Roosters battled away, undermanned on the day but contested everything. Matt Williams a great game, strong and highly skilled. The consummate leader! Sam Cassanova worked hard in the centre, Kye Higgins great season goes on, quick mover and quick thinker. Gorn Tree mainly in defence using strength and guile, and young Jasper Siemek standing out as a star of the future. Ever reliable Ross Bascomb played deep in defence and repelled many Hawks attacks. A Grade experience to young players bodes well for the future at Roosterland, coach Butch Tree will be happy with the effort of these lighter bodied players.
