On Anzac Day Peter West coughed up blood on a flight home from New Zealand on a stop over in Melbourne and has been in hospital ever since recovering from a rare lung disease.
The nonspecific interstitial pneumonia has no known cause and affects the tissue that surrounds and separates the tiny air sacs in the lungs, affecting the exchange of oxygen to carbon dioxide between the lungs and bloodstream.
The Marble Range Football Club and the community are getting behind a fundraiser at the club on June 29 for Mr West and his family to help with associated medical costs.
Boyd West said his father had been sedated twice and in an intensive care unit for the last month.
"He needs significant treatment in the hope to get him to some stage of recovery where we can start talking about a transplant," he said.
"For the last two months Mum's been in Melbourne living out of a hotel."
The 'local legend' as he has been described is known for his time as the Port Lincoln Primary School principal, past owner of the Coffin Bay Hotel and his numerous coaching roles with Marble Range over the years.
The Doing it for Westy fundraiser will be held at 6pm, June 29 at the Marble Range Football Club at Wangary.
The event will feature dinner, games and live auctions, and any auction donations can be dropped off at the Coffin Bay Post Office.
Eyre Peninsula Bus Charters will run a free shuttle service from Coffin Bay to Wangary on the night, leaving from the Coffin Bay Yacht Club car park and the parking lot opposite 1802 at 5:30pm.
