Wolves Women Off Beat in Surprise Defeat

The Chambers Franklyn Joondalup City Wolves Women’s team were beaten on Saturday night by the South West Slammers at HBF Arena.

South West toppled the Wolves 80-69 lead by Courtney Bayliss’ 26 points, including six three-pointers.

It was the Wolves second game without marquee big Kayla Steindl, who is currently visiting family on the east coast. Steindl brings the team an average of 16 points and 11.7 rebounds, and an energy has been missed in her absence.

Clearly, she is a big part of our identity, so it definitely takes some adjusting to play without her, it was effective against the Redbacks but unfortunately we couldn’t sustain it against a really upbeat Slammers team,” Coach Charles Nix said.

Georgia Denehey top scored for Joondalup putting up 18 points, while Amber Land did her usual work on the glass snatching 13 rebounds to go along with her 11 points.

The Slammers broke out to an early lead with Courtney Bayliss connecting on two three-point attempts in the first quarter.

Izzy Miotti got into foul trouble in the opening term meaning the Wolves turned to their bench unit a little earlier than we’re used to.

The Wolfpack got up to their usual second quarter tricks, putting enormous pressure on the Slammers offense causing turnovers and offensive fouls.

After Land and Miotti hit Joondalup’s first two made three-pointers, the lead had been cut back to one. A late layup from Izzy gave Joondalup a 33-32 lead heading into the main break.

Unfortunately, in the third quarter, Bayliss and Makailah Dyer put on a show, managing to give the Slammers a 14-point lead at three quarter time.

Dyer scored 24 points for the game.

The Wolves never stopped hustling, but they just couldn’t seem to catch a break in this one.

Denehey had a big fourth quarter, including hitting two late threes, but Joondalup just couldn’t contain a strong South West side, leading to a final score of 80-69.

Joondalup fell to second on the ladder following the loss but are still confident and continue to grow every week.

When asked about the pressures of holding a top two spot in the latter stages of the season,Coach Nix stated, We will continue to work and make the required adjustments to be the best possible team we can be every time we play. At the end of the day we will end up where we deserve to.”

Dell Lights Up HBF Arena

USA Import Ridell Camidge shot the lights out to roars from adoring fans at HBF Arena as the Chambers Franklyn Joondalup City Wolves dismantled the South West Slammers.

Camidge hit eight threes en route to an eye-catching 46 points, as well as throwing down a massive posterising dunk, in the Wolves 115-55 victory.

Coach Ben Ettridge had high praise for Ridell saying, “He’s doing his job, he’s finding his rhythm and his last three weeks have been outstanding.”

The rest of the roster appeared to catch the long-range bug after Dell’s huge first quarter with the team hitting 20 threes for the game.

On the defensive end, Joondalup managed 17 steals and forced 30 turnovers, with Reece Maxwell claiming five steals of his own.

Tyler Livingston top scored for South West getting 16 points.

The first quarter was shades of what was to come with Camidge hitting four threes, including converting a four-point play, and getting his first 17 points before the first break.

About two minutes in, Earnest Ross Jr checked out of the game following a heavy fall after taking contact on a drive, with a hip injury precluding him from the remainder of the contest.

Coach Ettridge remains hopeful that Ross will be fit to hit the court next Saturday versus Goldfield Giants on the road.

Camidge wasn’t alone with Sam Curtis ending the first quarter with two consecutive threes, and Maxwell and Captain Seb Salinas both also hitting two threes in a row to open the second quarter.

The Wolves put the foot down outscoring the Slammers 30-6 in the second quarter.

Camidge finished the quarter hitting Joondalup’s last ten points including converting a second four-point play for the game.

Camidge was showing no signs of slowing down, with a whopping 27 points to half time.

There were no surprises to start the second half with the opening points for the Wolves being, you guessed it, a big three from Ridell Camidge.

Although, the man on fire for the night showed that he’s not just a shooter, hitting Damian Matacz with a slick assist leading to a three-point play for the veteran Matacz, before then making the play of the game.

A quick steal got the Wolves onto a fast break that saw Camidge go up high and come down hard with a monster slam over the South West defence. Words do not do it justice, it’s there for those with access to the Wolves Instagram to see for themselves.

Camidge subbed out early in the fourth quarter with his incredible 46 points, but Sean Easther and Maxwell made sure to keep up the long-range execution to round out the game.

The reality is, Dell pretty much wrote this report for me, with his masterful showing from long-range in the win that put the Wolves back on top of the ladder with 13 wins and three losses.

Wolfpack Basketball returns to HBF Arena on June 22 when your Chambers Franklyn Joondalup City Wolves take on the Perth Redbacks.
