The Goulburn Valley League celebrated 125 years of football history at a special Hall of Fame presentation on Sunday evening, the 2nd of June at the Shepparton RSL.
A third “Legend” was announced and a further seven people were inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Well known identity “Freddo” McMahon of Tatura was honoured for his sixty-year involvement with Goulburn Valley football when he joined Robbie Orrman and Gary Cooper as League Legends.
Freddo was the first player to pass 300 GVL games and following his playing career, worked tirelessly in many roles including GVL Board Director in supporting the game.
Amongst the seven inductees to the Hall of Fame was the second netballer to be inducted in Debbie Atkinson who won Three Wellman Family medals as best player in the A grade Netball competition.
The name of Cooper was further enhanced when former Kyabram star Jeff Cooper joined his nephew Gary as an inductee.
Bruce Watson, a 300 game player with fifty years involvement with the Tigers became the third Rochester inductee.
Mooroopna star Billy Wong who played in a premiership at every level and played 312 senior games, became the fourth Mooroopna player in the Hall of Fame.
Long serving Euroa player, administrator and GVL board member Mick Williams was inducted for his commitment to the League.
337 game Kyabram player Tony “Rusty” McDonell who played football until he was 47 years old, also joined the Hall of Fame.
Michael Souter, the grandson of Wilf Cox, the first Morrison medallist proudly joined his grandfather as a member of the Hall of Fame.
GVL Board Chairman David Roff said that it was a wonderful way to celebrate the League’s history by recognising people who have made a fantastic contribution to the League.
