Wolves Claim Gaye Mayger Memorial Shield

The Chambers Franklyn Joondalup City Wolves have claimed victory over the Perry Lakes Hawks and in doing so, claimed the Gaye Mayger Memorial Shield on Saturday night at HBF Arena.

Both clubs came together, as they do annually, in support of Cancer Awareness.

As well as witnessing two fantastic games of basketball, the game and cause also enjoyed immense support from the organisations and fans from both teams, which was tremendous to see.

The Shield victory comes at the hands of the Wolves Women’s team defeating the Hawks’ Women 69-59 following a huge performance from Kayla Steindl notching 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Captain Amy Kidner filled the stat sheet putting up 14 points on a field goal percentage of 71%, to go with her six rebounds, four assists, two steals and one block.

It was a great return to form from the Wolves Women following last week’s big loss to the Lakeside Lightning.

A freshly shaven Charles Nix, all in the name of charity, said that “we’ve got so many new pieces in, new coach, new system. We’re going to have some ups and downs but if we keep working hard, we’re going to be a really good team.”

It was a battle of two defensive minded teams with the Hawks drawing first blood leading at quarter time 15-13.

Sarah Donavan started strong for Perry Lakes getting to the free throw line a few times in the first quarter.

The second quarter started back and forth with neither team managing to break out, until a Wolves timeout called with 6:50 left in the half.

Shortly after the timeout Kayla Steindl got fouled shooting a three and converted all three at the free throw line to tie both teams at 23.

Steindl finished the first half on 14 with Kidner putting up seven as the Wolves went into the main break leading 30-25.

Jamie Cherry tied the game up for the Hawks to start the second half but a couple of big threes from Chelsea Belcher and Georgia Denehey helped stretch that lead back out to ten points.

The third quarter ended at 49-40 with Steindl and Kidner sitting on 18 and nine respectively.

Both teams were hitting back on forth threes to open the fourth quarter with the Hawks clawing back but not being able to overcome the Wolves defence.

As a whole the final quarter was fairly uneventful with the Wolves comfortably holding on to their lead and taking the final ten-point victory.

Following Sunday’s win over Kalamunda Eastern Suns the Women are now 5-1 on the season.

Wolfpack Basketball returns to HBF Arena this Thursday April 18, in the pre-Easter blockbuster when the Joondalup Wolves contest the Rockingham Flames.

 

 

Clint Steindl Stuns Wolves in First Loss

The Chambers Franklyn Joondalup City Wolves hung on desperately until the very end but were toppled 92-84 in Saturday’s Cancer Awareness Round battle for the Gaye Mayger Memorial Shield.

Clint Steindl scored 30 points including seven of his 12 three-point attempts for the Perry Lakes Hawks, handing the Wolfpack their first loss of the 2019 season at HBF Arena on Saturday.

As the Men’s team lost by eight and the women’s won by ten, the Wolves lead the Hawks by a total of just two points when claiming the shield on aggregate.

Earnest Ross Jr again starred for our Wolfpack scoring 21 points with six threes made, along with seven rebounds.

When asked about what kind of positives the boys can take from this first loss, Coach Ben Etteridge said “we played 40 minutes and we tried hard. We got to do some things we don’t get to do in a blowout situation, and it gave us a chance to play through some adversity.”

The Wolves held a six-point lead at the end of the first quarter at 28-22 with the evergreen Damian Matacz, in his first outing for the season, scoring six of his own in his first quarter of 2019.

Following two threes from Ridell Camidge and a mid-range pull up for Kevin Davis to start the second, Joondalup held a lead of as much as ten points.

Steindl then launched a Hawks comeback, with the Wolves managing to hold on to a three-point leading going in to the half time break, 46-43.

Camidge had 13 in the first half following an eight-point second quarter, while EJ had seven points and five rebounds.

At the end of the first half, Ben Ironmonger had to be subbed out of the game with a blood nose but would check back in later without concern.

The second half began with a back and forth three-point battle before the NZNBL bound Lochlan Cummings along with Ryan Smith would lift the Hawks to a nine-point lead. Cummings and Smith would finish on 17 and 13 respectively.

The Hawks would hold the lead until the end of the third with the score at 69-78.

The start of the fourth quarter saw the Wolves rally back and take the lead again from a pair of Ironmonger free throws with around six minutes on the clock.

 In the dying moments, Steindl would go on to hit x3 three-pointers, drawing the contact on one and converting the four-point play. It would be too much for the Wolves to overcome with intentional fouls to finish the game setting the final score line 94-102.

Five players ended up in double figures, including Matacz posting 14 points without missing a shot in his first game back.

 Following Sunday’s win over the Kalamunda Eastern Suns, with EJ boasting an impressive 33 points, the Wolves sit in first place with a 6-1 record.
