Hot and dry conditions for the opening of season 2019. Fitness tested with fast and open football on show for good crowds everywhere.
Elliston saluted lost heroes with a nail biter at Wudinna. Big name inclusions for the Roosters and the Magpies, so nobody knew where this would end up. No quarter given by any side as the lead was traded throughout. Footballers and Netballers from both clubs linked arms for a minutes silence prior to the A Grade football in a moving tribute to Jay Williams and Nick Paul. Wudinna United found themsleves ahead going into time on, but slick forward movement saw a late goal to the Roosters gving them the lead. Right on the final siren, an indescretion in the heat of the moment by a water boy saw a free kick, and 50m awarded to the Magpies for an after the siren kick from 45m. The shot fell an agonising metre short for the Magpies, but signalled a jubilant Roosters playing for lost mates. Great game in trying conditions, and both clubs will be happy for a hard hit out.
Central Eyre took on the huge task of the Grand Final smarting Hawks at Piednippie. The first quarter a shoot out, but the fit and hungry Hawks moving away thereafter. Plenty of highlights in a match between the two league powerhouses of recent years. Hawks happy with the form of new recruits Kenny and Powell. Centrals welcoming back Tasman Fitzgerald and Ty McKenna will be better for ths run, and appear very likley to challenge for silverware again in 2019.
The Tigers out of the blocks with a rush, but tired late with their higher energy game style, allowing the Bombers some catch up. Another entertaining match on the vast Poochera oval, these two neighbours so often play close games against each other. Damon King a great target with four goals, welcome back Callum Cook and Lachy Mc Innis. For the Bombers, Mitch Gum commenced where he left off last year, with a huge game, Ben Brown a good pick up and Simon Webb a target as always, three goals.
