Double-double for Wetzel and career high for Armstrong
In NCAA Division I play Yanni Wetzel recorded his first double-double in Vanderbilt University colours but it wasn’t enough to get the Commodores the win. The former Harbour standout forward scored 10 points (4/5FG) and also garnered 10 rebounds but unfortunately it is now 12 straight losses in the Southeastern Conference for Vandy after going down 64-53 against Auburn.
Sam Waardenburg hit double figures for the sixth time this season and the third time in the last seven games but Miami University Hurricanes fell 64-57 at Boston College. Sam’s 10 points came without missing a shot (2/2 3PG, 1/1 2PG, 2/2FT). The former Rangitoto small forward also corralled 5 rebounds and came up with a steal and a block - the Hurricanes 3-10 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Matt Freeman had half a dozen points as Oklahoma Sooners beat Texas Christian 71-62. The former Westlake forward also added 3 rebounds and a block. After five straight losses it was a welcome win for Oklahoma -they improve to 4-9 in the Big 12 Conference.
Fordham University Rams beat Davidson University 58-42. Zara Jillings produced just 2 points in the win but did snare 5 rebounds and 2 steals in a strong defensive performance. The Rams are 10-3 in Atlantic 10 Conference play and sit second on the ladder behind Virginia Commonwealth University (12-1). VCU recorded two wins during the week despite being without leading scorer Akiene-Tera Reed who missed the games due to a hip injury.
In NCAA Division II action Charlotte Armstrong came up with a career high 7 blocks as Barry University Buccaneers beat Florida National 89-74. Not only was it a career high for the former Epsom Girls and Harbour standout but also the sixth highest shot blocking effort in school history. Charlotte filled the stats line with 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and a block.
The sophomore forward is playing an increasingly significant role for Barry (6-10 in the Sunshine State Conference) averaging 17 minutes per game in the last ten fixtures.
