Career high for Waardenburg - college hoops wrap
Last week University of Miami Hurricanes forward Sam Waardenburg played a career high 37 minutes in his teams 89-75 defeat at Penn.
Despite being on the losing side Sam still scored a season high 14 points on 5 from 7 shooting – 2 from three from beyond the arc.
Jack Salt and Virginia University Cavaliers are a perfect nine from nine after defeating Virginia Commonwealth 57-49 on Sunday. Jack only had one point but did pull down 7 boards for the highly ranked Cavaliers. Depending on which poll you view they are currently ranked between #3 and #6 nationally.
Matt Freeman and the Oklahoma University Sooners are hovering just outside the Top 25 on the rankings after some good results lately. Matt chose the iconic Madison Square Garden to have his best game of the season to date for the Sooners. He provided some excellent interior defence as the Sooners defeated Notre Dame Fighting Irish 85-80, claiming a pair of blocks and 4 rebounds. He also scored a valuable 11 points converting 3 from 6 triples.
Vanderbilt University Commodores enjoyed a comfortable 79-51 win against Middle Tennessee to improve to 6-2 for the season. Yanni Wetzel benefitted from 17 minutes court time making 5 points, 3 rebounds, a pair of steals, an assist and a block.
St Mary’s California Gaels had little trouble seeing off New Mexico winning 85-60 with Dan Fotu dishing 3 assists to accompany four points and four rebounds – St Mary’s now 6-4 for the season.
In NCAA Division II action Alex Talma recorded his fifth double-double of the season Biola University Eagles had their wings clipped 84-78 by Concordia. The senior forward produced 15 points (7/10FG) and 11 rebounds, six of those off the offensive glass. The Eagles are 2-2 in PacWest Conference play having lost their last two games.
Back in Division I Akiene-Tera Reed was the best Harbour performer in women’s hoops last week. She produced an efficient shooting display (5/8FG, 6/6FT) but her 16 points were not enough to get Virginia Commonwealth Rams across the line at Cincinnati going down 66-54 – the Rams still boast a 6-4 record ahead of a week off.
Chanel Brodeur-Muir scored 4 points as St Thomas Aquinas Spartans convincingly beat Mercy College in their opening East Coast Conference game of the season – the Spartans won 78-55 and are 8-1 overall this season.
Georgia Perrott-Hunt was strong on the boards claiming 6 rebounds for Tiffin University but the Dragons were slayed 72-64 by Trevecca Nazarene to slip to 2-7 for the season.
Hutchinson Community College are rated #8 on the National Junior College rankings after an impressive 11-0 start to the season. Keeley Tini, in her first season with the Blue Dragons, is averaging 6.7 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.
Also travelling well are North Dakota State College who have a 9-3 record. Olivia Bell, in her sophomore year, has started all but one game for the Wildcats and is second on the scoring list averaging 8.7 points per game. In addition, she averages 5.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per outing.
