American college season - Week 1 wrap
In a week when Kruz Perrott-Hunt was announced as the next Harbour player headed to the States – he is off to the University of South Dakota in 2019 - we review how the current crop of players are faring as the 2018-19 NCAA college basketball season begins.
Sam Waardenburg in his second season with University of Miami added 5 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal to his 11 points in a strong showing as the Hurricanes roared past Lehigh 83-62.
Dan Fotu scored with his first shot in college basketball. He landed a triple for his only three points of the game as St Mary’s Gaels defeated McNeese State 87-65. He also dished an assist for fellow Kiwi Quinn Clinton to also register his first points for the Gaels.
Dan followed that with 3 rebounds in 24 minutes of action in the 92-63 win against Utah Valley.
Jack Salt was only required for 19 minutes by Virginia University as the Cavaliers hammered Towson 73-42. The Tall Blacks big man contributed 3 points, 3 rebounds and and a block for the Cavs ranked 5thin the NCAA pre-season polls. On Sunday the Cavs skipper produced 4 points and 3 rebounds in a 76-57 wina gainst George Washington.
Another 2018 Tall Black Isaac Letoa played 8 minutes for Dartmouth College as the Big Green thumped Newbury College 114-39. Isaac produced 4 assists and a couple of rebounds in the win.
Oklahoma Sooners also won its season opener defeating Texas Rio Grande Valley 91-76 with Matt Freeman dropping one of two three-point attempts to add to an assist and a block.
Yanni Wetzell scored with his only shot as Vanderbilt Commodores squeezed past USC 82-78. Yanni also came up with a couple of defensive rebounds.
In NCAA Division II action Alex Talma has recorded a double-double in his first two outings of the season. He had 11 points and 13 rebounds as Biola University Eagles soared past CSU San Marcos 64-58 and 15 points/11 rebounds in an 79-61 loss to CSU Los Angeles
Zack Te Puni debuted for College of St Rose as the Golden Knights went down 80-49 at powerhouse Syracuse in a pre-season game – Zack got on the scoresheet with a couple of points and three rebounds.
We will catch up with Denhym Brooke’s progress when University of Hawaii at Hilo commence their programme this week.
In women’s action Tera Reed has moved quickly into her work leading Virginia Commonwealth to an 84-55 win against Longwood. Played in front of almost 4,000 fans Tera scored a team high 15 points (4/9FG) and added 4 rebounds.
Over in the Bronx Zara Jillings added a couple of rebounds to 4 points as Fordham University Rams comfortably defeated Wagner 78-59.
Chanel Brodeur-Muir, Georgia Perrott-Hunt and Katie Diakhaby have begun their NCAA Division II university playing careers.
Chanel scored 2 points on debut for St Thomas Aquinas Spartans in the 87-75 win against Nyack.
Georgia and Katie have begun their university careers after two years at Junior College.
Katie scored 10 points (5/8FG) and added 3 rebounds as Maryville Saints bounced back from a first up loss to defeat Davenport 71-64.
Tiffin University Saints also shook off the disappointment of a first outing loss beating McKendree in a close one 76-74. Georgia, like Katie, secured a starting spot and finished with 2 points, 4 rebounds and a block.
