Mid West wishes to extend our sympathy and thoughts to the family and friends of Peter “Frog” Holmes upon his recent passing after a battle with illness. Survived by wife Heather and sons Milton, Robert and Jethro, Frog is well known and respected across the entire Eyre Peninsula.
Hailing from Smoky Bay, Frog moved to Rovers in the Mid 80’s, becoming a key player in so many Rovers successful years, playing in the last premiership in the Streaky Bay Football League in 1987 prior to League merge in 1988. Rovers lost the 1st Mid West Grand Final in 1988, but then went on to win the next three in 1989, 1990 and 1991, dominating the competition. A tough and hard key defender with a move on the ball now and then. While he was a willing participant in the physical on ground component of the game, he was the 1st to enjoy a wind down beer with team mates and opposition, many of whom have become life long friends.
After playing, Frog become a panel umpire for many years, he was particularly good with his work with the whistle, able to relate to players enthusiasm for the contest and enjoyed a great respect with his fellow umpires. His toleration for stepping outside the rules became far more stringent, but in his usual way was able to control difficult situations in a non confrontational manner and made a point of explaining circumstances to players and officials ending up with a friendly ale or two.
Following his umpire career, he returned to assist at club level, initially with the Hawks and later with Wirrulla where Rob, Milton and Jethro are all actively involved as players and administrators. Frog coached the A Grade Bombers in 2012 and 2013, displaying his renown passion for the game and the contest.
Along with farming, Frog travelled far and wide shearing, so his extended friendship base is huge.
Many years of service to our game and one of our true characters, Frog will be sadly missed.
