NEWS: Futsal Geelong’s Summer season comps in full swing
FUTSAL Geelong’s Summer season competitions are in full swing with the Summer 7’s modified outdoor format now complementing the traditional indoor Futsal version at the two City of Greater Geelong Council run centres, the Leisuretime Sports Precinct (LTP) and Barwon Valley Activity Centre (BVAC).
Following on from the successful Social 7’s pilot program which saw eight Open Age Men’s teams take part in the recent Winter season at Leisuretime, a total of 40 Men’s, Women’s, Men’s Masters’ and Boys’ U18 teams are participating in the weekday league competitions at the LTC.
The Monday night Men’s Division 1 league comprises of eight teams, as does the Division 2 competition on the same night, a total of five Women’s Division teams and four Men’s Masters’ teams make up the Tuesday night leagues, while a further 10 team are taking part in the Wednesday night Men’s Open Age Social Division. To round out the Summer 7’s, there are five teams playing in the Friday night Boys’ U18 competition.
The Geelong Futsal Summer Leagues kicked off this week with grading matches in the various divisions at the BVAC and Leisuretime venues.
Last season saw a staggering total of 33 different league competitions in the Men’s, Women’s, Boys’ and Girls’ categories across the two venues.
It is expected that, despite the emergence of the outdoor Social 7’s concept at the LTC, the number of teams playing in the various Futsal leagues will be on par if not greater than the 2017/18 season.
In addition to the Futsal Geelong administered competitions, a new nine team Senior Mixed Futsal league is about to be launched on Wednesday nights at the Surf Coast Recreation Centre in Torquay.
As with previous years, the large number of off-season Futsal (and now Social 7s) participants is expected to translate to a continued explosion in the growth of registered participants of the outdoor version come next Winter.
It’s still not too late to register a team or sign up to play Futsal at either BVAC or LTC. For further enquiries, email futsalgeelong@geelongcity.vic.gov.au or call 5272 4990.
