The Swans’ year has been a bit up and down but, in general, it has been a good rebuilding season. Although the Swans only won 4 games, they lost 2 other games against the Nomads and their arch nemeses the Kangaroos by only 1 point each. One of their other losses was because of a paperwork snafu so they could have, in fact, ended the season with 7 wins which would have been good enough to get them fourth spot on the ladder and into the finals.
One of the Swans’ best recruits this year has been former Collingwood grand final player Rick Watt as coach. Watt was a late comer to the Swans but under his coaching the Swans game plan developed further and their confidence grew. However, with the young players they were relying on, consistency was one of their main problems. The other was accuracy in front of goal. The Swans kicked 164 goals in 2008 but they also kicked 188 behinds for an accuracy rate of 46.60%. The Swans were the third best first quarter team with 44 goals. They were the 5th best goal scoring team in the next three quarters.
Off the field the Swans have been run by a handful of people and they would love to get a few more people on their committee at their next AGM so they can go further forward.
After a preseason under the tutelage of Rick Watt the Swans will look to make the finals again in 2009.
