Canberra FC booked themselves a spot in the Grand Final and a shot at the treble with a 5-0 win over Tigers FC at Deakin on Saturday.

Paul Macor’s outfit will face Canberra Olympic in the NPL grand final this Saturday at Deakin and it will be the fifth meeting between the two this year with each team having two victories so far.

Tigers goalkeeper Cody Nash stopped a certain goal in just the fifth minute as his arm denied Kofi Danning’s close-range effort and he was called into action again five minutes later when he stopped a strike from Thomas James low to his right.

Canberra FC’s early pressure finally prevailed 27 minutes in though as Matthew Waters hit a low drive that Nash couldn’t get to, and Macor’s side took that advantage into the break despite a number of chances to extend it later in the half.

The shot stopper was called into action again five minutes later when he denied forward Thomas James’ effort across goal down low to his right.

The hosts’ pressure finally prevailed in the 27th minute as midfielder Matthew Waters nailed a low, driven shot that proved too strong for Nash.

Macor’s team headed into the sheds with a 1-0 advantage and their dominance in the 45 minutes warranted more than the score line displayed.

Michael Mensah continued the narrative of the first half as he opened the second period with a curling effort that struck the cross bar from out on the left side.

Tigers looked to capitalise on Canberra FC’s wastefulness and Nikos Kalfas came close just before the hour mark as he cut inside on to his right foot and struck an effort at goal, but it was saved well by Jordan Thurtell.

In the 64th minute, Tigers’ star Nicolas Villafane hit a bullet of a free-kick towards the top left corner only to be denied by a sublime diving save from Thurtell that kept his side in the lead.

And eight minutes later the Canberra FC fans were joyous once more as James intercept a loose pass before finishing tidily to put a dagger in Tigers.

Danning them pummelled a strike into the roof of the net after a good turn in the box, and suddenly the hosts were up by three goals with 10 minutes to play.

When Michael Kita brought down James inside the final 10 minutes things only got worse as the Golden Boot leader dispatched the penalty, and Danning grabbed another goal in stoppage time to finish the rout at five goals.
