NEWS: Barwon must overcome champions Rangers in final round to clinch Top Four spot in Men’s Div 1

BARWON will host Geelong Rangers in the final round of the Geelong Region Men’s Division 1 this weekend and will need to come out with a win to ensure fifth placed Surf Coast isn’t given a chance of stealing its spot in the Top Four.
Last time the top placed Rangers and 4th placed Barwon met, Rangers came out 2-1 winners at Myers Reserve.
Barwon can secure their spot in the top four with a victory, while Rangers have nothing to lose in this fixture as they have already won the league title.
If Barwon were to lose, however, Surf Coast would replace them in the top four should the Coasters defeat Lara United at its Banyul Warri Reserve complex in Torquay.
Last time Surf Coast met Lara earlier in the season, Surf Coast was victorious by a scoreline of 2-0.
The lone Friday night fixture will see the second placed Surfside Waves visit last placed Barwon Heads, in what is set to be a tough local derby to end the season for the Hammerheads who will be relegated to next season’s Division 2 competition.
When the two teams met earlier this season, the Hammerheads were defeated 8-1 by the Waves.
On Sunday afternoon, Drysdale will host Breakwater Eagles at the Drysdale Sporting Precinct.
As the table stands, Drysdale currently sits eighth with 21 points, just two points behind seventh placed Deakin Ducks.
The Eagles are on equal points with last placed Barwon Heads are ahead only due to a better goal difference.
Earlier in the season when the two teams faced off against each other, Drysdale defeated the Eagles 2-0.
Corio will also need a win to secure its place in the Top Four when it takes on the Deakin Ducks at Deakin University.
Corio is just two points ahead of 5th placed Surf Coast and one point ahead of 4th placed Barwon. A victory would ensure that Corio cements its place in the Top Four.
Last time Corio and Deakin met was way back in Round 9, when the game ended all square at 2-2.
